Blake Barnett sent me down a five star rabbit hole today. Random recruiting stats for the weekend.

Starting with Alabama's 2008 class through the 2015 class, UA has had 32 five star recruits.

20 were taken in the first 46 picks of their respective draft (63%).

1 is still on the team (Damien Harris)

2 were drafted in the 4th round (Da'shawn Hand and Nico Johnson)

3 were undrafted but signed as free agents (Tony Brown, Robert Foster, Trey Depriest)

4 transferred with at least 2 years of eligibility (Blake Barnett, Phillips Sims, Kendall Sheffield, BJ Scott)

1 was kicked off team (Eddie Wiliams)

1 left the team with a year of eligibility due to medical reasons (Tyler Love)

If you take out Barnett, Sims, Williams and Sheffield based on being at Bama 2 years or less the percentage of 5 star Bama players taken in the top 46 draft picks jumps to 71% with Harris having a chance to increase that number.

The overall point is if you are a 5 star recruit, you should go to Bama.

Feel free to correct any of my poor maths or missed players.

The next two posts are the updated lists for the 1st and 2nd posts in this thread. They've been emailed to TideSaint, but it's 7:15 am in Korea. So he'll probably be posting them fairly soon.

Impressive. Entire post is impressive. Can be summed up in "71% of 5* players who commit to and play for Bama are taken in the first 2 rounds" That's legit and sounds like a recruiting poster.

Yep. Good chance Alfano will be rated 5-star later on. Btw, he'll be an early enrollee.

247Sports Take: Alfano to Alabama
(Steve Wiltfong)

quote:

Five summers ago, the Central Jersey Seminoles were in Florida playing for an American Youth Football National Championship and new Alabama defensive end commit Antonio Alfano was one of the stars of this team full of 7th graders. Alfano was living in the backfield throughout the tournament and his biggest play came in the third place game where backed up on the one-yard line he got himself a strip-sack, which then led to him taking the football 99 yards the other way for a score.

“I still have all those videos,” a proud father in Frank Alfano told 247Sports. That touchdown is one of the elder Alfano’s all-time favorite clips. And there’s been some good ones since then as the younger Alfano developed into one of the nation’s top prospects regardless of position in the 2019 recruiting class.

After having him in camp, Rutgers offered the now 6-foot-4, 285-pound Alfano a scholarship prior to his freshman year, and a couple years and 23 offers later this recruitment ends with Alfano announcing his plans to play for the Crimson Tide on Friday.

The dream was enunciated and the plan was created on the way home from that tournament in Florida. “I talked to him and asked is this something you seriously want to get involved with, I said I think you have a lot of potential,” the elder Alfano remembered. “He said yes.”

Frank didn’t waste any time from there. He immediately got Alfano with trainers and put a support system around his son to help create these opportunities, with a lot of work being put in at the local Pyramid Club Fitness Center in Rahway, New Jersey. It wasn’t just strength training, but speed and quickness too as Alfano evolved into one of the best 3-4 defensive end recruits in the country.

No player at the position is more athletic in this 2019 recruiting cycle as last month Alfano proved by posting a big Nike Football Rating including a 4.82 laser-timed 40-yard dash, a very impressive 4.27 shuttle, an elite power ball toss of 46-feet and a 36-6 inch vertical. His score of 124.80 is 12th highest in the country regardless of position.

The 247Sports Composite ranks Alfano as the nation’s No. 5 strong-side defensive end and No. 1 recruit in New Jersey. He chose Alabama over his other finalists Georgia and Penn State. On film, you see a dominant combination of power and quickness at the point of attack, with Alfano even making offensive linemen miss en route to the backfield. With the Crimson Tide not signing a defensive end in 2018, this is a big pickup for the defending National Champs.
