My choice is Robert Johnson. With Bob Dylan on his heels.

Influential because he/she influenced music/musicians?

Or influential because he/she influenced history?

The Beatles if we can count a group. Mozart or Beethoven if only individuals.

The Beatles, Elvis and Madonna have good arguments to be made. Biggie Smalls for hip hop

Most of these conversations assume post jazz. So assuming that, how do so many on this board overlook James Brown (the godfather of hip hop, funk, and soul)?

It really blows my mind. Nobody had as profound of an influence on their era and still continues to do so with modern music.

Elvis caused a world wide shift in which age group dominates music tastes. Before him it was middle-aged people. After him young people have heavily influenced the types of music that are produced.

Mozart is probably my favorite classical composer, and if we're going "all-time most influential" then he is definitely in the conversation along with Bach and Beethoven. Everyday, across the entire globe, you can hear their works both live or recorded. I mean, Falco wouldn't have been shite without Mozart...

James Brown is certainly up there. I think he is the greatest entertainer in history. He certainly made pop and funk what it is today. I also think he holds the record for number of albums ever produced by any musicians and he never duplicated tracks. He also wrote all his own stuff.

Maybe THE greatest musician of all time. (Modern era, no Bach or Mozart. That's silliness)

However, I still rank Robert Johnson at the top of this list. Without him, rock and roll, blues, pop, funk, none of it would even exist.
