I really need some help with an opportunity I have in front of me and my family. I have been offered a job in Savannah Georgia they will pay for moving expenses and it’s to run an office in my field which is HVAC. I am from Mobile and I have never lived any where else. On paper it’s an opportunity I would be an idiot to pass up but it’s coming together really fast. Just need some advice on the area and if anyone else has done something similar. TL DR I’m being a pussy I’m sure.

Well guys and gals we did it. I am currently sitting in our empty apartment in Richmond Hill. No regrets as of yet.

personally I do not know anything about the area and cant help any. But i will give you advice from my own personal experiences.

One of my regrets in life is that I pretty much stayed in the same area all of my 50 years. If I had it to do over again, I would have moved around a bit.

And Savanah is close to the beach so there is that.

Not sure I should be one giving advice but to me life is about taking chances, embracing change and stepping out. That attitude will give you plenty of highs and lows. Don't sign up for safe it is boring.

Savannah is actually a great city. I would never search for a job there but darn sure would not shy away from a great opportunity in that city. Best of luck with your decision.

edit...if given the choice I would live in Savannah over Mobile. My opinion could be biased because I grew up in GA and absolutely love the Beaufort SC area just north of Savannah.

Savannah is supposed to be a great place.

I don’t have kids, but my initial question is how old are they? Much easier if they’re infants/toddlers versus middle school or high school.

Do it brother I promise you won’t regret it with the way you described this opportunity. Life is about taking chances. Time to get out of Mobile.

I am fairly old but one thing I will say is this. I have never regretted a move. But I do wonder about the ones I did not take.

It sounds like you know this is a good opportunity. Take it.

Mobile will be there in a few years if you change your mind.

Savannah is a great city with good food. It's a "sister" city of Charleston. Tybee Island is close by. I've heard that some parts are rough, but that's a given with any city. I'd say it compares roughly to Mobile. If the pay is good, then I'd put in some serious consideration to moving.

My wife was born and raised there. I have lived there a couple different times and still have family there. Savannah is a great town and the fishing in the area is awesome. However, the public schools there are awful. I have never seen a town where private school was a big business like there. So prepare to pay big or live in One of the surrounding counties. The private high school my wife attended there is now like 17k year.

Do it. Savannah is a fun town and beautiful.

However, don’t ever take advice from some random dumbass on a message board. Pray (if you’re into that), write your pros and cons and ultimately do what feels right. Good luck man.

Savannah is a nice area. Like most places, it depends on where you live, but its got good fishing decent beaches, and its relatively close to Florida if you want that. I'd do it man. Cost of living there aint bad either.

You'll have to put up with some Georgia Bulldog bullshite, but the city is fine. Go get dat money baw.

Savannah people need Air and Heat too.

Gives you a chance to grow in several ways. Mobile will always be there. Give your kid a chance to experience something new as well.

I will need pics of wife to offer my thoughts on her moving with you.

Go for it, it will be worth the experience and promotion. Good luck.

I moved from Mobile after school and I miss it every day. It's one of those places you don't realize you love until you leave it, at least for me.

That said, if your family is on board and it's what's best for your career, you gotta make the call to move forward.

Like others have said, Mobile will always be there.

I was in the Army for 21 years.

Moved around a good bit.

Made friends at every stop and enjoyed the different places we lived.

You will be fine. Home is where you are.

I have not moved since I retired from Army, but who knows what lies ahead.

I have always lived in th Mobile area (not counting college), but I travel a lot. I’ve spent some time in Savannah and it is a pretty cool town. Very, very similar to Mobile, but a little more well-known, IMO. And, I agree with someone else - it is like a sister city to Charleston, SC. Close to Hilton Head. Close to St. Simons, etc.

I would go for it. As someone else said, Mobile isn’t going anywhere. If it doesn’t work out, move back.

There are a couple Georgia posters (don't remember who specifically) that live in Chatham county. One of the islands I believe. You might should post on the SEC OT to see if they'll help with particulars of the area.

I've never spent more than a day at a time in Mobile so can't offer comparisons, but Savannah is a cool little city. Go there several times a year and have friends that live there. I'd definitely explore it. There's more to it than beautiful squares and candy kitchens . But there is a notable element of crime specifically in certain areas.

4-hr access to Atlanta, 2 hr access to Jacksonville.
