By list of prestige/reputation, along with preparing leaders for combat?

Mine:
1)Texas A&M
2)Naval Academy
3)USMA (West Point)
4)Air Force Academy
5)Coast Guard Acad.

In all seriousness, what is the reasoning behind pretending you're a military school? Are there incentives for students joining e.g. scholarships, free room and board, does it count as ROTC? I just want to understand.

I'll just leave this here...

The Citadel

We got nothing for the REAL service academies but among "regular" colleges we hold our own...

Texas A&M was originally a military-only school.

It's one of the Senior Military Colleges. In the same class as the Citadel, VMI, Norwich, Virginia Tech, etc. Always forget the sixth. I think it's in Georgia though.

UNG is the answer you're looking for. It's not a good commissioning source.

...and their commissionees don't let you forget it.

How I would describe the SMCs and USMA:

USMA: All slightly weird. Half are brown-nosing, undercutting super studs. Half are chill and don't like to talk about having gone to West Point.

VT: Normal. They never really talk about how VT is a SMC.

Norwich: Yankee assholes who are assholes not because they went to Norwich but just because they're all assholes. I haven't met a single one that wasn't an a-hole and also a good Officer. Weird people. Most of them are psychopaths.

Citadel: Cool people but they usually party a little too hard. They all have crazy stories but not in an annoying "look at me and this school I went to" way. Never met a Citadel grad I didn't get along well with.

VMI: Generally easy-going but also weird at the same time. Every fresh out of VMI 2LT I've met was overweight, not sure what was going on with that. Serious USMA inferiority complexeses. Love to talk about Patton.

UNG: Halfwits with inferiority complexeses who all look slightly malformed...like their mothers drank while they were pregnant or something. I've come to the conclusion that UNG is not a quality education.

TAMU: 75% of them are a combination of all the worst Ring Knocker and Texan stereotypes. 25% are cool as shite. Cue input from CGSC Lobotomy, he's one of the good ones.

That's fairly accurate.

And after going to my class reunion a few years ago, my wife would agree with point #1...

Kentucky was once an all male A&M

The 6th is in Georgia but if I were to rank them for historical prestige then VMI would top the list followed close behind by The Citadel. TAMU and VPI (while both good schools) have leveraged up by growing their student body size far beyond the scope of the cadets.

So was Clemson.

Citadel cadets have always been trouble makers...

Marion Military Institute is a two year prep school which sends a large number of it's graduates to the Big Three military academies.
Old school with a excellent history.

West Point, The Naval Academy and Air Force Academy all lose cadets every year, which reduces their graduating classes.

MMI has a program that almost assures that if you play their game, their way, they will transfer you to an empty slot in the academy you desire at the end of your freshman or sophomore year.

Marion is money well spent if you fail to receive an appointment to one of the three service academies. At one time, there were over 200 officers at Flag rank in the three major branches of our military that traced their education back through MMI.

There are more officers from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in the Navy than from the USNA.

I've never met a North Georgia graduate.

As far as West Pointers, they're like Sergeant Majors. Either great leaders, horrible pieces of shite, or horrible pieces of shite that somehow fool their superiors into giving them top block evaluations.

Many Aggies never realize they aren't at A&M anymore. Those that don't either advance far or advance far enough to be disillusioned with Army leadership.
