From the article:

quote:
Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday that Tennessee athletic director John Currie and Schiano signed a memorandum. Shortly thereafter, Sports Illustrated published a legal analysis explaining that if all the necessary parties had signed the memorandum, Schiano could sue the university.
But without Davenport's signature, the memorandum could lack legal credibility if Schiano were to pursue litigation against Tennessee.
When UT agreed to a contract with men's basketball coach Rick Barnes in 2015, the memorandum had to be signed by four parties: the UT athletic director, the UT chancellor, the UT treasurer and Barnes.
Similarly, when former football coach Butch Jones signed a memorandum 2012, it had to be signed by the UT athletic director, the UT chancellor, the UT treasurer and Jones.

UT fricked.
Good to know LSU isn't the only school with clowns in charge.

Note to future UT head coaching candidates: get the UT chancellor to sign the MOU before you do because their word is not good.

How is UT fricked if the Chancellor didn't sign? Seems this is good for UT. Maybe I am misunderstanding.

Just a simple case of buyer's remorse

And they think this won't hurt them with the next coach.

That won't hold up. The man will get paid.

I've talked to a business lawyer before fwiw. There's a concept that if someone representing an organization makes a deal, it can still be binding.
I would think the AD signing something applies in this case. Anybody in business law, please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is simple contract law. Greg will get something, it will just depend on how his laws can argue that he suffered from this. Tennessee has already made a statement that it wasnt because of him.
Anyway they fricked, lets see how much.

Still a dumpster fire that no respectable coach will want to go to.

Verbal contracts can be more dangerous in court that written ones and UT made a verbal agreement and is frickED.

Dammit. I was just about to start this thread.

KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee chancellor Beverly Davenport did not sign a memorandum of understanding between Tennessee and Greg Schiano.
Chancellor's office spokesman Ryan Robinson confirmed that to the Times Free Press on Monday, the day after Tennessee backed away from a deal that would have made Schiano the school's next football coach.

Lmao go read the SI piece about how all of this works. Schiano's leverage is basically shot if all four necessary parties have not signed the MOU.
Tennessee may give him a small amount to go away but they are on no way on the hook for millions atp

I said from jump Tennessee screwed up badly. But, folks want to argue me down to the point I walked away.

It's likely that Currie had actual or apparent authority to sign on behalf of the University unless spelled out otherwise.

It was never going to be something like $20 million.
Anything looks bad though. Tenn will want to get this behind them ASAP and lawsuits won't do that.
