What’s going on with Alabama’s recruiting?

I promise I’m not trolling at all.
I just saw someone yesterday say y’all were down in the recruiting rankings and then again in the Bowden thread right now on the Rant. Went to look at 247’s rankings and y’all werent in the top 10 and have 11 commits.
A lot of big commits coming late or taking a smaller class or what? I haven’t paid any attention to recruiting this year

Lost some good recruiters.

They will close strong like they always do. It does seem like they are lagging more than normal though.

Coaching staff changes going into the offseason.

Saban is being more picky with this class due to the limited amount of scholarships.

Saban getting old and lazy.
But seriously they lost some really good recruiters in the past couple of seasons and have limited numbers.

Limited number is not the reason, has more to do with coaching changes.

Our recruiters have been recruiting about as well as they coached at Auburn.

With the NCAA on Ole Miss’ arse they can’t afford to take any chance$

It's not really limited scholarships, 22 instead of 25. Clemson had limited scholarships when they only signed like 13 players last year.
Something else is going on. Bama isn't really trending for major recruits like they usually are. With the early signing period in 3 weeks, Bama could be in serious trouble.
Saban didn't want a early signing period and it doesn't seem like he has adjusted to it.

Bama draws heavily from the Southeast and has pulled in elite talent from the states of Georgia, Louisiana, Florida (esp Miami area), and has beaten Auburn relatively consistently for top Alabama talent.
Auburn seems to be out-hustling Bama in the state of Alabama, perhaps because Bama has been recruiting more on a national scale and left the proverbial hen house unguarded.
UGA is recruiting lights out in the state of Georgia. Clemson has also risen to national prominence and recruits that state very heavily. Auburn has done well there too.
Mississippi talent is down big time this year thus can't really take advantage of the coaching turmoil in that state.
Likewise, Louisiana talent is down this year; theres only a couple guys that fit that elite talent level that Bama wants and needs. One is a heavy LSU lean (Terrace Marshall) and the other one Bama is battling for but will be an uphill climb (Kelvin Joseph).
It's sort of a perfect storm of losing some top recruiters, down years talent-wise in certain states, and more competitive recruiting staffs at others universities, namely UGA, Auburn, Clemson; more arguably, LSU.
Saban is extremely competitive and adaptable and I'm sure this will be addressed if he intends to stick around for awhile, but I do see the noose tightening a little bit as far as there not being as enormous a talent gap between Bama and the competition. Also Bama's 2017 class was filthy so maybe Saban feels OK with getting some program players this year and then grinding out another #1 class next year.

The above is a good post. I really think that talent across the southeast is down this year compared to recent years and especially compared to the next couple of years. Combine that with some new rules that no one really knows how to navigate, losing a majority of your ace recruiting assistants, and contending with rising powers in your traditional talent honey holes, and you end up with a potential down year.
"Down year" at Bama probably means top 5 class, top 8 at worse.

Saban following the Dabo Swinney approach
But seriously I don't see why people are questioning Saban because of 247 nerds class rankings. Saban knows what he is doing

I will just bama does not really get many players from Ga. at all, never have and usually not the ones UGA wants.. Saban hits La bama, miss,fl,washington d.c.,cali,texas,new jersey and tenn. for recruits. usually eight from bama, and the rest spread out from around the country.. UGA could stay instate and fill their roster, can't really do that at bama. Bama has lost two instate guys this year they want, Coynis Miller a dt and Asa Martain a rb, both committed to auburn mostly due to our depth chart we hear, but we are still recruiting them so we will see what happens. I also believe Saban thinks with the early signing period it is better to lay back a bit and see what happens. normally we have a few guys committed we have to cut lose before signing day, can't really do that with the early signing period... Should be fun as hell to see how all this works out with coaching changes and staffs being flipped upside due to all that chaos.

I think it is a simple explanation. We have lost out far more on players we want from the state of GA then we have gotten. Richt always won more recruiting battles against Saban. Yes we get players from GA but not like what we want.

Talent wise AL is a down year as well.

I think people way underestimated how many great recruiters Bama lost last offseason. The transition was not smooth with multiple recruits complaining about Bama not contacting them much. I think for the first time the major personnel loss had a big affect on Bama's recruiting machine. It allowed schools like AU to really establish strong relationships because the same dudes that have been recruiting them for multiple years were still on campus while Bama was reorganizing. AU landed Miller because of how close he was with Garner. He was also really close with his former Bama recruiter so when he left the Tide were playing catchup. Just an example of some stuff that has happened
Will add they have swooped & won plenty this year too. Jalyn Armour-Davis was all AU for like 2 years then Bama said "sup" & he jumped on board. They still can flex their recruiting muscle plenty & fact that they aren't playing this Saturday you can bet they will hit the trail hard
But Bama is gonna be fine this year. They will still sign a really good class. I also expect that if they can keep their staff somewhat together they will have a shot at #1 again in 2019 tho UGA might pull it off next year

It's called the Kirby Effect.

Saban is being honest with them and will not promise them that he is going to be there for their entire career. Thats fact
