Not trolling. Are State fans nervous that Mullen is about to be pulled away from Starkville? What happens then?
I don't really care. The nonsense that people spew over it is the worst part. Mullen is paid in the top 15 nationally. He's been here 9 years and this stuff happens every year. Florida, Tennessee, and A&M have all hired other coaches since Mullen has been here. He's the second-longest tenured coach in the conference and that means something to him.
He has quietly built an unbelievable foundation here - unbelievable facilities, strong support staff - and he's really upgraded his recruiting staff. Now that the cheating bears are taking a back seat, State has a chance to clean up in recruiting - the 2019 class is the deepest and strongest in recent memory. These are facts that the casual idiot doesn't know when he starts speculating that Mullen would leave in a heartbeat for another job.
I'd say Mullen has about a 10% chance of leaving. If Franklin left and PSU opened up, I would bump it up to 40%, but Mullen already turned down PSU once. It's a different job now though.
But if he did leave, that's fine too. State will be ok.

As of 2016 fiscal reports, State ranks dead last in total revenue and total profit in the SEC. After this year, I expect it to be even lower because of all the renovations. State isn’t going to pay Mullen more or get into a bidding war for him. It’s just facts.
We also have the NCAA Division I minimum for sponsored sports, meaning we don't have millions of dollars going to women's gymnastics and the like. And we don't have coaching buyouts to pay.
We could take Mullen up north of $5 million and not miss a beat. Is he worth it? Probably not, but no one is going to pay Mullen Saban money. If Mullen leaves, it will be because he wants a change of scenery.
When we hired Mullen, the mood was that MSU was toxic and no one could win here. Kevin Wilson made some bold statements after he finished runner up and went to Indiana, where he was eventually fired. Mullen proved that wrong. If Mullen leaves, we will have good coaches lined up wanting an opportunity. Its not like we have to go back to a Croom-level coach.
With the entire roster basically returning from a 9-10 win team, eight straight bowl games, and our in-state rival about to enter a 10 year drought, MSU is actually an attractive job.
When Mullen came, Ole Miss had just beat us 45-0, gone to the Cotton Bowl, was beating the hell out of us recruiting and we had finished last place 8 of 9 seasons.
Completely different job to sell this time around.

When did I ever say Nebraska would try and outbid for him? Never. I just said above that Nebraska is still paying their current coach and Pelini but they’re also desperate. It might not even be about the money.
But, since you’re getting defensive and can’t have a normal conversation without making asinine comments, I’m out man.

Well , then Florida was lazy. Mullen hired Sexton a few years ago as a direct shot over Stricklin's bow.
Does Mullen not like Stricklin?
Tell me more.

I did find this amusing quote from last year:
Mullen on Stricklin: "We've won more games than Florida has the last six years … No wonder they want him and people are coming after him."

If I'm Mullen, I don't take the Florida job. I'm already paid big money and they've proven they will fire anyone at the drop of a hat.
It's just not worth. I have my program built. My players in place and a super long leash if things did go south.

I think he lost a little respect for Scott's authority. And ,as Dan can do, he pouted about the urgency that Stricklin showed in signing Mullen to an extension a few years ago. I think they have a positive relationship, but it's not peanut butter and jelly time

Mullen is too old for another rebuild.

Mullen ain't going to Florida, anyway, but yes, his relationship with Stricklin was tense.

Yet he makes $5M a year. And gets a raise pretty much every year. Nebraska would have to pay around $6M per year to enter the conversation, if it were just about money. No one is going to hire a new coach for that kind of money unless it is Saban, Dabo, Meyer, or Jimbo (maybe).
If Mullen leaves, he will take a pay cut. That is a fact. If he leaves, it will be because he wants to leave, not because someone won a bidding war.
This isn't rocket surgery.

Straight from your 1003rd post, on page 1 of this thread

I think other programs like Nebraska for instance come calling. Throw more money at him and he would instantly be in an easier conference.
Sorry if I mis-read

The biggest draw for him would have to be the staff he would pick up.
Brewster is probably his first call. Get him on board and immediately have the best recruiter in the state of Florida. He probably takes Grantham as his DC. Wouldn't be surprised if he gave Brian Johnson a call to be his OC and assistant HC.
That's a dream team.

There is a higher chance that my TV at my tailgate gets stolen from an LSU fan when you guys come to town than Dan Mullen leaving.

I'm not too nervous. Do I think Mullen will stay here forever? I wouldn't bet on it. He's still relatively young, and he might have other career goals such as an OC in the NFL or a bigger name HC job one day. But he has better job security at State than he would have at Florida, Tennessee or A&M.

Aw, poor little guy got embarrassed, pretended to quit the thread bc he's too smart for it, then down voted every MSU poster.
Pathetic.

I don't know, he wasn't the first coach to make chicken salad out of Starkvegas, and recruiting in Gainesville hasn't been bad in the last few years.

It would be, it just wouldn't happen at Florida because he won't be there.

Well put.
I think the selling point for Florida would be Mullen's prior experience at Florida and wanting to achieve those heights again. I know y'all are discounting that appeal but we've seen time and time again that highly driven coaches will jump at the right opportunity.
So I think as long as his relationship with Stricklin is serviceable, it really comes down to whether Mullen wants that shot and believes that it's worth it to do that at Florida. I doubt Florida has changed much since he left (in terms of the powers that pull the levers) so he should know what he needs to know to make that call.

Not saying it can't and won't happen, but if you hear the same thing every year for almost a decade and it never happens, you eventually stop worrying about it.

Mullen is knocking on the door of a Beamer/Bowden deal with us. There's definitely upside to the UF gig in that he could compete for championships very quickly, but there's an awful lot of negatives that come with that.
If Mullen keeps a positive trajectory with us for a while, he's gonna get a damn statue and his name on the stadium before he leaves.
