Why can't it be that the universe has a creator, but we have no idea about that being other than that? Why do people want to believe that this creator set rules and regulations and wants to be worshipped?
I think the essence of almost any religion is to answer the oldest question in humanity "why are we here"?
They generally go on to explain 'how we got here' (creation stories), 'what we're supposed to do while we are here' (religion rules, laws, etc.), and 'what's next' (afterlife, reincarnation, etc.). But they are all based on the question of 'why'.
I think people take comfort in the way religion approaches the 'why' aspect. People like to feel special and important. Believing you were created intentionally and 'in the image of' the creator of the whole universe makes you feel special. Feeling that you have a purpose.
The 'why' is something that I don't think science could ever answer. Maybe, but I just don't see how.

Sorry, not my intended message.
A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.

I do not feel obliged to believe that same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect had intended for us to forgo their use.

I've done that many times before. Why can't Christians understand that to some of us, simply answering a question with "because god" isn't good enough. Answering a question with "because god" is just a simple way of saying "this subject is beyond my understanding and comprehension".
There are many things that people once thought were the actions by gods that we now have scientific explanations for. Take lightning for example. The Greeks though it was Zeus being angry. We now understand that it's an electrical discharge caused by a build up of positive charged particles in the atmosphere and negative charged particles on the ground (static).
If it were not for people who decided that the Zeus answer to lighting wasn't good enough, we would not understand the truth about it today and still believe it to be an angry god.

debating religion is kinda like a chicken arguing with a cow that beef tastes better

Actually debating religion is one of the highest forms of thought. A pursuit noble enough for some of the greatest minds in human history.
Presenting your opinions as though they were facts, refusing to consider evidence, and mischaracterizing opposing arguments is not debating.

Well, I was actually surprised a "discussion" like this lasted this long without being moved.

I just really can't fathom how someone can straight-face say that christians are persecuted in this country. Or that there is an 'attack' on christianity.

My issue with religion, is that how is one supposed to know which one to chose? I hear all the time that "If I'm wrong, nothing happens and I just die, but if you're wrong you go to hell. What do you have to lose?" Well, what if your religion isn't the right one? What if another religion is correct? It also blows my mind (and others on here as well after reading this thread) that some people give glory to God for saving their relative or friend all the while millions of people in 3rd world countries die of many things that they have no control over. Any God who would chose to cure one person and let millions of others die who have done nothing wrong is not someone I want to worship. Just because man "sinned" before a bunch of babies and kids got into this world doesn't mean they deserve to be allowed by God to just die. What about kids born retarded and with terrible birth defects? Those people didn't do anything, yet have to live a miserable life through no fault of their own.

Did I say persecuted?
In every aspect of American life, there is pressure being applied to remove any reference to Christianity.....and if you're oblivious to that fact, I'd question your intelligence....or honesty.

People shat all over Tim Tebow for nothing more than him being a good Christian. That's a small example but don't act like uts unheard of. Removing "under God" from the pledge, "in god we trust" from the money, removing prayer from classrooms, teaching of Evolutionism vs Intelligent design are all issues that have come up
And before you attack me im ambivalent about most of these things. I don't care what you believe and you shouldn't care what I believe. No one knows shite about religion or nonreligion until you're dead anyway. Just making a point.

Well for the Tim Tebow example, people are assholes. Atheists don't exactly get a fair shake from everyone either.
The money, pledge, and public classrooms are all government oriented. The government is barred from endorsing any single religion by the 1st amendment.
Evolution has mountains and mountains of scientific evidence. The actual evidence for intelligent design is a collection of books written thousands of years ago.

Humans are imperfect. No matter the sin, each sin commands the death penalty. One sin or a thousand...the wage is death. Every human who has lived has fallen.
The only way to avoid death is to ask Jesus for salvation. It's not possible for us to save ourselves. Coach Freeze is a man like us. He is tempted to lie and be selfish...just like all of us. I am not going to judge him as a Christian because I fall everyday. If he broke NCAA rules, he must suffer the consequences. But I am no better than anyone on this planet. The journey here is short.

Persecute means to subject someone to hostility or ill-treatment, thats the same thing as 'attacked'. Unless of course you mean that people are physically attacking christians.
Nobody infringes on your right to be Christian. They infringe on your right to subject all citizens to the rules and practices of Christianity.
I can't imagine that you would enjoy saying the pledge with references to allah. Or monuments of the vedas on the courthouse steps

quote:This country was founded on Christian values. That's why you saw it everywhere throughout our society. As VFL posted before, any fool can see how its values and the religion itself is under attack for the reasons I stated before. I never accused anyone of denying my right to be a Christian anymore than you've ever been subjected to the "rules and practices" of Christianity. Finally, if I was in Syria, Iran, or any other mainly Muslim country, I'd certainly understand why the culture was directed to the worship of Allah and wouldn't feel slighted if subjected to it. As a matter of fact, if you want to talk about Christian persecution, go over to that part of the world where you can see it.....and while you're over there, tell them you believe that all the Allah talk is just a load of crap and see what they say.
