Yea, agree.

I HOPE that it was some sort of misunderstanding or timing issue combined with overall frustration. However, if that was that, a personal reconciliation needs to take place immediately.

If it wasn't, and he's just a dick, show him the damned door. This sounds more and more like that dickwad from Oklahoma at Auburn everyday.

Those are some ridiculous rules. I don't even think Saban is that strict

The "Appearance" section is ridiculous, and the no alcohol is ridiculous if the player is of legal age. The rest seem pretty standard rules for D1 athletes.

I don't see a damn thing wrong with any of those rules. Goff runs a tight ship...so what? Nothing he's requiring is difficult or too much to ask. Some of you kids need to grow up and start acting like men.

Telling a D1 baseball player they can't wear backwards hats anywhere might be the dumbest thing I've ever seen, and I've seen some pretty dumb shite

The guy's trying to turn kids into mature young adults. That particular rule may be considered extreme, but he's attempting to make serious young men out of apparently a bunch of kids. Often, it's the small rules that begin the process of bringing a group together to become a team. None of his requirements are hard to accomplish, and all of them improve the individual.

Please explain how keeping your sideburns above your ear hole makes you a better person? Please explain how shaving your facial hair makes you a better person?

By requiring a group to adhere to the same standard of appearance, attitude and commitment, you begin to form the nucleus of "team" mentality (think military), and becoming a part of a successful team will make one a better person,IMO.

The consistency of his rules seem to be the issue.

But I see a ton of coaches do just fine and win championships without the appearance rules. The high school I used to go to had a coach that used to be in the military. He required all the same rules Goff did, and he was a good coach, but he never won a championship. Now he's gone and there's a new coach at this school who doesn't require the appearance and shaving rules, and he's been to 5 state championships and he's won 3 state titles in a row. I just don't see why coaches bring that in to sports. Seems like it's done more harm for Goff's team than anything if the players have given up like people have reported.

You make a good point, but I strongly suspect that the team that Goff was left with had little to no discipline...probably very soft. Sometimes you must tear something down to build it back the way it needs to be. I'm sure there'll be casualties, but that's got to happen to achieve the desired result. Although to a greater degree, think about Navy Seal training program and their finished product.

Yeah it could work out or become a disaster. We've just gotta wait until he has been here for more than one year before we'll know for sure

Exactly. We should start seeing things really changing over the off season.

We'll agree to disagree. I think you can build a team with strictness without dictating how your players wear their hair, what they wear, etc.

I have no problem with the list of rules outside the "Appearance" section. Those are to be expected.

I mean, it's a bit much, I'd hope if it was a culture thing that older guys would kind of make it clear it's not something we do. But, it's the first year, so maybe he felt like he needed to lay it out.

Obviously while working in the yard or shooting basketball or something, whatever, but I get it in a sense of wearing it that way walking around the quad. If that's part of your M.O. I don't really have an issue with it.

I'll be honest, that list isn't much different than the list I received when I showed up at a DIII school for the first day of Summer Workouts.

It's actually very, very similar.

Again, this is baseball. People in general may think a bunch of these rules are dumb, but they are not crazy in a baseball program sense. The "no drinking" ever thing seems a bit silly as does the "no backwards hat ever", but everything else is standard stuff.

Hell, Jason Motte had to shave his face before he signed with the Braves.

Like was said above, the issue seems to be with his rash adding to of the rules like the whole "it's cold you can't put your hands in your pockets" stuff. Those rules by themselves are not crazy at all IMHO. They are much less strict than a lot of crazy-ex military coaches in the JuCo and NAIA ranks (see Southern Union CC for a perfect example).

I'm confused. That thing says team meeting in 2015. Goof wasn't the coach then.

Clearly that was Gaspard's list. The date is 2015. And he wasn't enforcing them.
