I know I am going to take a lot of heat for saying this, but what concerns me is Jacob Eason's arm. He has thrown three deep passes this year and all three were underthrown. We got two PI penalties from two of them and the receiver came back and caught the third.

Before anybody points out the 50 yard "bomb" to McKenzie against NC, take another look. It was thrown 30 yards down field and McKenzie ran another 20 or so yards.

Ok. Now everybody can start throwing rocks at me.

I'll give him more than 2 games before I start doubting his abilities, but that's just me

I have actually thought about these throws a few times over the past few weeks, because you are right, he has underthrown all of his deep balls. I am sure he has the arm strength, I dont think that is the problem. I am thinking his timing is just off and he isnt fully in sync with the receivers just yet. Need to get him more reps IMO

He's actually appeared to overthrow receivers as much if not more than underthrow them. That's been my observation, at any rate.

I may be mistaken, but weren't at least one of those overthrown?

Maybe college receivers are faster than Washington State high school receivers. Ya think?

I agree with your overall point, but the UNC play was thrown from the 26 to the 33. Thats 24 + 17 which = 41 yards.

Didn't Aaron Murray and David Greene have "poor arm strength" too?

Question what you will about him, but I don't think arm strength is something experts misjudge. It's pretty objective.

No arm strength problem. He's working on his accuracy and touch so that he doesn't overthrow every time.

Biggest factor there is timing, which is why I think we ought to pick a guy and stick with them as the starting QB. I'd like for Eason to get the job and get his experience in this season. He'll only get better with reps. His timing will only improve by throwing to receivers often.

Not sure about his arm strength but he has not been close to accurate on several of his long passes. I'm going to go on record saying I still believe we would be better off with a mobile QB. Alabama is a prime example. They have gone from a mediocre offense to a dynamic offense with Jalen Hurts at the helm.

I think he's got the arm strength but his deep passes are surprisingly ugly for such a highly touted QB. The way they wobble in the air they look to be on the verge of being the proverbial "dead duck" throws. He has nice tight spirals and velocity on his short to intermediate throws and nice touch on his screen passes so I think he's either feeling pressure when throwing the deep balls due to his waiting around in the pocket or he's trying to aim the ball instead of just throwing it, which could be screwing up the way the ball is rolling off his fingers.

I agree. Eason's arm looks average at best. I don't know what happened. I'm speculating either a sore shoulder or technique affected by lifting.

why don't you take another look? Released on our 26 and caught at their 32.

There are a bunch of evaluations of Jacob's arm strength and other aspects of his game on the web...just search. He attended tons of camps including all the elite camps. I have yet to see any of the comments from those questioning his arm. They almost always talk about his ability to throw the ball a mile.

I'm not sure what people aren't getting about the fact that no matter what raw talent he has, this is a true freshman. Murray talked about how it was really good for him to have had a redshirt year and he predicted it would be challeging for Eason to jump right into the SEC. Look what Stafford was like for awhile...and he wound up being the first pick of the draft by the time all was said and done.

A redshirt would have been great for Eason but he's just going to have to learn on the go. No choice since clearly Lambert hit his ceiling long ago.

My two cents... You throw to where the receivers are or to their potential. We haven't been getting separation down field and QBs are trained to look for that. You have a split second to scan the field to see if receivers are open or going to be open when you release. If not, you go to the screen. Outside, inside/over the top, screen... Speed, timing, touch, and leverage are key.

This is why you see the bump and runs. To throw off the opponents defensive player and create separation. Coaches create separation by plays and teaching different techniques to receivers and teaching QBs to look for weakness, separation, leverage, etc.

Damn. This thread is now actually relevant, would not have said that 3 hours ago.
