I don't think he's off base for asking for a waiver, and I don't think Saban is (was) off base for declining to grant it. I think it's a rule, and if an exception is to be made, it's up the the kid to make the case.
It's all moot now, I suppose. The news cycle will turn our attention to the next Kardashian tweet.

One or two? Based on what?
Im assuming the SEC is the only conference in P5 that has rules against grad transfers in conference.Doesn't seem to be an issue in the Big 10,Big12,ACC or PAC 12.
Why,all of a sudden will it be an issue in the SEC?

I think Bama did renew his GiA. I think Smith refused to sign it because he wanted to transfer.

there isnt a rule against "grad transfers", they dont make a distinction when it comes to transfers within the conference.

Didn't a kid transfer like this from Ole Miss to Bama this year?

Then I think you wanted an "or" in your sentence, rather than an "and".

Bama's all out attack mode finally backfired.
Deaderick all out attack mode on Jordan Jefferson by doing illegal acts of spearing didn't backfire.
But calling a code red on a kids locker backfired.

Chris Black also asked for it mid-season in 2015. Smith did this in mid-June of 2016, aproximately a month and a half before Fall Camp.
You guys need to get your story straight, then, because earlier in this thread Alabama fans were saying they were angling for a release last November. Even gave a link talking about the e-mails, etc.

But if him simply not agreeing to the renewal caused it to be voided, then it didn't matter if the school offered the renewal.

Yup but it was a kicker who walked on. He's not on scholarship...

Him not signing the renewal doesnt matter. The school can renew either way(per what I read the other day)

There may be some changes from when I was in school, but scholarship athletes had to sign the GiA paperwork every year. It ups their legal agreements and allows the school to include them in insurance policies. Without that signature, the GiA for the new year did not go into effect.
But I've been out of school for more than a decade, so things may have changed.

Now that's just rude. NOBODY should wish the Kardashians on anybody else.

So there is in fact a rule against grad transfers.
Since they don't include grads.
Can you freaking get any more anal?

Never said it wasn't but WGAS!!
The point is about grad trasfers causing issues in other confrences and there really doesn't seem to be some type of wholesale free agency or poaching going on.

This. Saban typically puts together the best recruiting class in the country, but that isn't always a given.
This whole thing was a great big PR fail.

You really only see it with coaching changes
