No. Not without some major shift that lets them recruit top 10 classes.

Clay Travis can't help himself. But idiots will still spar with him.

Is he wrong? Does Bama claim a title that year?

So would a poorly constructed trophy be anymore damning than LSU trying to run Miles out of the building or Mizzou and their racial protest debacle?
what the hell? this thread is about neither of those things. incredible deflection.
if you want me to admit lsu handled the miles saga poorly from last year sure i admit that. i really have no problem admitting it. but again this thread has nothing to do with miles or even lsu.

Of course. But I hardly have issue with it. Alabama could claim 20-25 but they don't. Why 1941? I have no idea. 1945, 1966, and others are far more legitimate.

You're claiming that Kentucky committed a "pretty bad look" by recognizing their 1950 team. I'm saying a "pretty bad look" is relative in this conference if you're suggesting it's going to have a significantly negative impact on UK.

It's a tad embarrassing. Just because other schools do embarrassing things as well doesn't take away the head shaking factor of this trophy.

But, with some work, they have the footprint to land those sort of classes. They border a ton of states that produce solid talent and Kentucky itself produces a decent amount.
Kentucky, barring a miracle generation, won't home grow a national title. With some work, however, I think a patient coach can put the pieces together to build a great team.
I don't think Stoops is that guy though. If he doesn't make a bowl this year the Wildcats need a new head coach.
They can do it... but they need another Bryant.

And nobody will care much about it a week from now.
I'll take the trophy over some other issues some SEC teams are dealing with when it comes to image.

Well yeah, but Maryland is also a Bear Bryant away from a National Championship

probably not since it's kentucky. i don't mean that as an insult but it's just the truth.
whereas Ole Miss shenanigans with the west banner have been meme'd for over a decade now.

I will grant you, Maryland is a lot closer to a national title. There is an embarrassing amount of talent in their backyard.
Maryland... decent. The area around them? You could absolutely build a title contender around it. The problem is you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a college in that area.
Er... wait. I mean... Frick you and your ET look alike QB.
Sorry. Forgot where I was for a bit.

Geography isn't everything. Some of the top teams recently (Oregon, Michigan St.) have shite for local talent.

I honestly don't think he would do that well in a modern era. At least not from scratch (aka without the reputation of a guy who won a pile of titleS).

That's because ole miss fans think they actually belong. UK fans know they're a basketball school

FWIW, Kentucky probably missed the boat on any kind of NC contention for quite some time in not hiring Howard Schnellenberger.
For UK to be successful in the SEC, much less at a playoff level, they would need to make some serious inroads in Ohio. They've picked off a couple recruits up there that are Ohio State quality but they'd need to really dip in because the state of Kentucky itself isn't going to produce that much talent. I feel like they're at least trying to make adjustments to things in their control like facilities and coaching salaries to try to get back to consistent bowl status as they had under Rich Brooks.
Stoops had a pretty big mess to clean up while trying to maintain status quo in the SEC and learning on the job as an HC. If he gets UK back to a bowl this season then I have no problem giving him time. I'm not naive enough to think years of losing gets fixed overnight without putting a pretty big NCAA target on your back.

Oregon, thanks to Nike, dips into the rich recruiting ground of California. Michigan and the upper Midwest... as we know after Ohio State beat Alabama does produce enough talent to win a Natty.
The problem with the Michigan teams is that, again, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a university in the upper Midwest in a population that is declining.
Why be a second (though vital) stringer at Michigan State or CMU, EMU, WMU, when you can win a title at North Dakota State starting? There is talent there, but not enough to feed a system unless you have a great recruiter like Urban Meyer running the show.
