Do you think every 18 year old who screws around with 14 year olds gets probation? Do you think the fact that he was a highly sought after athlete had anything to do with his consequences?
It absolutely had something to do with it. Still, in the end, he was punished. He was on probation and had to sit out a year before entering college. Oh yeah, and he was recruited by Saban even after the incident. When it comes to football talent people will overlook A LOT.

What happened when he violated the terms of his probation?

Make no mistake, I am so conservative that my right arm does not reach far enough. But in this case, it appears that the road these men were going down was made visible and they have been given a second chance. There were no major felonies involved, and frankly, what they WERE charged with is something that could easily happen to any of us. I have myself bought a used gun before. Far better to give someone a second chance than contribute to the horrifying incarceration rates for trivial matters. There were no identifiable victims in the charges for these guys.
Good post. Well said.

Nonetheless, this situation has been and continues to be addressed outside the legal system but within the coaching system for our team. It's arguable which set of punishments we might consider to be worse if we were the ones facing it. But - giving second chances and earning your way back into good graces is another matter entirely. Rest assured that Saban doesn't take this stuff lightly and if you really think that, you haven't been paying attention. JMHO.
we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't think Saban likes his program potentially embarrassed but I'll be surprised if there is truly much if any discipline meted out.

Are you new here? Team vote dummy.
He was put on another 2 years of probation and ordered to do community service. He was suspended from the team and worked at a homeless shelter.

Fact remains that blindsiding someone could lead to serious consequences for that person. Thankfully Hill is a weak baby back bitch who wouldn't fight someone unless it was a surprise attack.
Dude. You are talking about a starting RB in the NFL, for one. Secondly, do you not see that you are using flawed comparisons to JUSTIFY what happened here? The kids were idiots, they did in fact get caught in a car with stolen weapons and pot. There is an apparent error in police procedure. I just don't see the point in finger pointing to other players from other teams and saying "oh look he messed up worse than our guys". A large faction of your fanbase is ready to just wipe this clean because they aren't in "trouble". I think that speaks volumes about what could happen behind the scenes in a situation like this, and what you guys seem to be ok with, but you don't have to drag everyone that has ever gotten in trouble into it.
Personally, I am happy that these guys got off; the DA should use discretion when bringing charges on people. However, by saying what he said, he blatantly gave them preferential treatment for being football players. It's an inconsistent precedent that he now needs to follow if he wants to retain any amount of credibility.

The problem isn't this case being dismissed since there's no real victim nor any real thing to suggest these kids are such dangerous criminals that the government needs to spend tens of thousands of dollars putting them in jail .
The problem is that any two kids who simply go to their jobs, go to college etc etc don't need to be going to jail for crap like this either.
The DA's choice of words was pretty dumb for someone you'd think may have some type of education and experience in these matters though.

It is absolutely true that Saban has no interest in seeing his program embarrassed, that's a fact. Despite your doubts, though... rest assured that outside of any real jail time, what they will undergo under team discipline will be far worse than they would otherwise. It is being addressed, will continue to be addressed throughout the summer, and nothing will be handed to them easily - there will be a process of earning back. And from our perspective, it will be internal and private.
JMWQHO.

ETA: Oh I see, you think I am a hypocrite, beause i would have needed to comment on every situation before this in order to comment on this one. No sure how I couldn't make sense of that at first

quote:You think even if one of them had any common sense they would admit they get special treatment? But I bet they can't find a single DA who has used a dumber excuse than they shouldn't be charged because they are outside sweating.
But honestly Alabama fans, if an LSU,Auburn or Tennessee player had been in the same situation you wouldn't think something appeared out of sorts?
I can't wait to see how many lawyers of football players are going to try to use this defense in the future.

People should be glad these young men got a second chance. Whining about Alabama and special treatment is silly. A Louisiana DA did this. He would have treated LSU players the same.

Definition of the term melt. Great work.

They got special treatment because they were football players from Monroe.
FWIW the DA would have to prove either one of them knew or should have known the gun was stolen.
