Being a good Bama fan, I'm gonna look at this in a positive manner.

The thought behind training in the ocean is that the water makes it harder to lift your feet. So then on dry land your footwork will supposedly be faster.

I have no idea what the tennis ball is about.

I understand the footwork training in the ocean, kinda. But why the tennis balls?

As for the tennis ball, I do know that Julio Jones trains by catching tennis balls, but as for throwing I haven't a clue.

Why Ocean and Tennis Ball?

quote:

"It's basically just to work on your base," Hunt said Wednesday by phone, when asked to describe how his ocean work translates to the gridiron. "In the pocket, things collapse, and you're going to get hit sometimes, you're going to get pushed and everything. So how can you keep your base tight where you get hit but you don't move?

"It's a balance. You get pushed around, but you have your balance, you're not able to just get thrown and pushed over so easily."

quote:

Hunt and the quarterbacks were asked to close their eyes while holding a tennis ball. After dropping back, a clapping noise would come from the left, center or right, signaling the direction the ball should be thrown in.

"It's not really about the throw," Hunt said. "It's more can you stop on a dime, even with your eyes closed, and still make the throw?"

Throwing a tennis ball or baseball is a lot different than throwing a football.

I fail to see how using a tennis ball improves quarterbacking unless they were working on pocket mobility, etc, and not actual passing.

If Whitfield comes out and pronounces this Alabama quarterback as one of the best the week of the LSU game, then give me LSU in the game. This Whitfield guy saw an Equal Opportunity as a black guy and created himself.

I think it would be an effective training technique.
With the ocean reducing your ability to step into your throw, you are training your arm to fire the ball faster. Like in golf...the greater the club head speed, the farther the tee shot flies. Same principle here, I think. So using a tennis ball instead will allow you to throw with greater velocity in the water. Once on land, you will throw a football much harder.
