Lets just say two of the greatest ever and call it a tie.

You realize bear Bryant avoided playing Johnny Vaught at all costs ? He would not play him!

Saban, and it's not even close. Bear had 200 scholarship players and wasn't as dominant. Saban is in comparison with Belichik (sp?) right now with regards to levels. My point is, under all the rules and regulations of today, to do what he is doing is ridiculous. And I can't stand the man.

This is the weirdest schtick I've ever seen on this board. 97 posts of this statement

The scared drunk would not play him.
Avoided him like sobriety and not beating his wife

Ok..lol. Bryant had the same amount of Scholarship players as everyone else did in his day. There wasn't some rule that said, " Bryant can have 200 players, everyone else just gets 100".

As far as dominant? He won 13 or 14 SEC Championships and 6 National Titles and was robbed of 2 more.

Played him in 64,65,66,67,68,69 and 70

It is so hard to compare coaching.
The game has changed so much.
On the one hand, Bryant could recruit many more players.
On the other hand, he was at the mercy of voters to determine championships.
I almost think you cannot really compare college coaches from different eras.
Of this era, I would say Saban is the best.

I honestly think Saban's run is more impressive. With all the rules in place that weren't when Bear was the coach and how many more programs field competitive teams every year, Saban having the success he has is much more difficult

That's 15 playoff appearances. In my opinion, he would have at least 10 NC's
Bryant was a .500 bowl coach. Considering you have to win twice in the playoffs, I give him 4 championships. Less that bama claims he won now.

coaches have always been under the mercy of voters to win championships and still are

Who is whose OC? If Mal Moore is Bears OC, and Kiffin is Sabans, then Saban arse rapes Bear.

While this is true, it is not nearly to the extent it once was.
And I have a feeling it will be going to eight teams in the next ten years.

All things being equal it's much harder now due to restrictions in place with scholarships and gift ect. Coach Bryant was like a god. BOTH are driven to be successful. Different Era hard to compare. BRYANT didn't haft to deal with the BS saban has to. I guess Saban for what he has accomplished the last 9 yrs.

well, if you think about it, programs during bear's tenure also had the benefit of having two different polls in which they could win a national title as well

Great coaches/leaders would be great in any era and under any circumstances and conditions.

It's almost impossible to compare because the landscape of football has changed so much.
The era Bryant coached vs. the era Saban coaches in have a vastly different set of circumstances.
They both were the best coaches of their era.

So your saying great coaches and players have people that taught them things about the game along the way in their career? How freaking observant of you. That doesn't mean they weren't ultimately better than their teachers.
