This seems like the complete opposite of a home run hire. Maybe a fielder's choice at best? Will have to go back and look at stats/team structures, but these are not glowing recommendations IMO:
OC @ University of Tennessee from 2009 to 2012
OC @ University of Arkansas from 2012 to 2014
Pittman seems like would be a good O-line hire, but just not so sure about Chaney.

Well this went downhill fast..

Chaney has an innovative mind. Could come in and put the pieces we have at skill positions to work. Esp if he has a QB and a healthy Chubb.
Posted on 12/12/15 at 8:16 am to Beantownbulldog
Dude hasn't seen his Chubb in years.

Pittman is an "A: hire...Chaney..."C+" at best ..

Yeah... read that as well, but not sure that is enough for me to get excited. If he'd done it with multiple QB's sure, but the years above are not strong calling cards.
Also, this from the article about why we couldn't get Enos:
102nd ranked passing offense... so we'd move up like 20 places?

Enos’ first year at Arkansas yielded a dramatic improvement for the Razorbacks offense from under previous coordinator Jim Chaney. Arkansas’ total offense rank went form No. 63 in 2014 to No. 31 this season. The passing offense went from 102nd to 33rd. Arkansas won one more game this regular season compared to last.

Agreed. Almost would say why not give Pittman a shot to run the whole show? Just not sure what Chaney's bringing to the table other than a hefty appetite.

Therefore, the combined offensive coaching hire is a solid B or B+.
The CKS hire is a solid A.
If we keep Rocker and get Cochran that's another solid A.
This can work. Esp if we keep Mr. Eason.

Runs a Pro Style offense with some spread concepts. Has had some pretty good offenses. Has done good work with QB's and has a balanced attack. He is also good friends with Sam Pittman.

Not so sure about your math there bean.
Let's say we give CKS the A, as I agree I think he's got a high ceiling. The *one* concern that most people have about him is lack of offensive prowess. So the most important hire as we've all stated since his hiring is the OC.
The combination of Chaney and Pittman at Arkansas still netted SEC seasons of:
2013: 0-8
2014: 2-6
Obviously this was the beginning of a new coaching era for them.
Looking at Chaney's seasons at UT during tDecline I'm not any more impressed.
There had to be no shortage of people interested in this role, so just not sure how this is the best option.

K. This I can get behind.

Which ones? I went through the seasons at UT and Arky and all seem underwhelming.

Hopefully every candidate that was even considered would fall in this category.

Seems like bad reason to hire OC if there aren't other qualities about him that impress.
Not saying it's a bad hire, just saying that on the surface, it looks like a swing and a miss.

From 1997-2005, Chaney was the offensive coordinator at Purdue. He also served as recruiting coordinator his initial five seasons with the Boilermakers. During his tenure, Purdue led the Big Ten in passing offense five times and total offense three times. The Boilermakers finished in the nation's top 10 in total offense six times, including the 2000 season when they averaged 471.2 yards per game to rank fourth.
While at Purdue, Chaney worked with Drew Brees, who led the nation in total offense in 2000 (358.1 yards per game) and was selected the winner of the prestigious Maxwell Award as the college player of the year. Additionally, Tim Stratton was named the winner of the inaugural John Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end. Purdue captured the Big Ten title in 2000 and advanced to its first Rose Bowl in 34 years.
