“Stereotypes become deeply held convictions for a great many people,” explained Wilbon. “To me in order in sports: boxing, and then basketball and then football, these are the places where African-American men, acceptable in some parts in no other place in conventional life, are accepted above all else in those things, boxing, basketball and now football, more quarterback until recently. So now you get a place where this kid is an outsider looking in. The stereotype works against him even though I would vote for him for Heisman.”
Wilbon also added, “Race is always a factor and [McCaffrey] would’ve received so much more publicity, McCaffrey, who has an incredible family in history of achievement in sports in America, if he wasn’t white.”

Idiocy. If anything, it helps.

So being white held him back? I have a feeling he's gonna be just fine.

I think he's (Wilbon) probably correct.

Al Sharpton isn't gonna like this

I'm a bit confused. Being white hurts his chances?
I would say it helps unless there are that many black media people voting only for black athletes.
It seems more eye popping for a white running back to be in the Heisman race.

People assume that he's a lesser athlete. It was always going to be a controversial point, but it does have some merit.
If he has the same skill set, same level of athleticism, same stats and a different skin color, he's more widely respected for his ability.

I figured race would work for him, not against him. Funny how that works.

Here we have it. The white disadvantage. But only at RB/WR. if he were a QB, no issue.

Yep. Lunch pail, high football IQ, heady type of player.

That's what Wilbon is going for.

Ah Jeez!
Good thing he said it and not someone else.
I think the West Coast hurts him more than anything else.
CBS is a good platform to have for Heisman winners and Danielson promotes the SEC like no one else.
I've only seen McCaffrey play one time.
That's the problem.

To me, that reads...
Black people are better at sports than white people. Because of this, they are accepted in the sports world...but not anywhere else in the world. Since McCaffrey is white and whites aren't as good at sports, he isn't getting enough respect for the Heisman.
Seems like a backhanded compliment to me...with some "black people aren't treated fair" added in.

If the point is that white skill position players, other than qbs, are looked at as being inferior then he has a point.
