If you expand it to 6, you would basically have to give the power 5 conferences an auto bid as long as they are unbeaten or have 1 loss.
The auto bid would theoretically be forfeited for a conference champion with 2 or more losses.
Under this scenario:
Auto-bid: Big 12 Champion (Oklahoma)
Auto-bid: ACC Champion (Clemson/UNC)
Auto-bid: Big Ten Champion (MSU/Iowa)
Alabama winning the SEC would be an auto-bid
Stanford winning the PAC 12 would not
Florida winning the SEC would not

Probably not. The BCS era never had a rule like that. The shitty Big East had a lot of undeserving "BCS Bowl" teams.

The two loss thing is kind of arbitrary. What if you lose both games by a point each on last second field goals?

I didn't say that they wouldn't be in. I said it wouldn't be AUTOMATIC.

Check out the ratings. SEC games get the highest ratings, nationwide. This entire affair is about money.

Why have ANY automatic spots though?
By doing that you are basically saying every single Big 12 winner is just as good as every SEC winner. Why reward easier conferences with a guaranteed place at the table?

2. Michigan-Ohio State (6.8), Noon, ABC, Nov. 28

4. LSU-Alabama (6.3), 8 p.m., CBS Nov. 7
5. Florida State-Clemson (5.5), 3:30 p.m., ABC Nov. 7
6. Michigan State-Michigan (5.1), 3:30 p.m., ESPN Oct. 17

They need to go to 8 teams.
5 Power 5 conference champs
+ 1 from the non P5 (whoever is highest ranked)
+ 2 at large selections

A 1-loss or unbeaten power 5 conference champions should be in.
Let's go over how many of those we've had over the last 5 years:
2015: 3 guaranteed, 4 possible
2014: all 5
2013: 4
2012: 3
2011: 2

Last night's statement from playoff chairman Jeff Long was very enlightening concerning how the committee decides who gets into the playoffs. Being a conference champion is one of several criteria but it is not the first or even the overriding criteria. In his statement last night, playoff chairman Long stated:
“In the committee’s eyes, if a team has not clearly separated itself above another and they are indeed equal, then we apply those four criteria of conference champions, head to head and those factors,”
“So they don’t come in until the committee reaches a deadlock, and (at that time) we add in the conference championships.”

I would like to go back to the SEC champ playing in the Sugar Bowl.

Right now, the only teams that have separated themselves, pending Saturday's games, are Clemson, Alabama, and Oklahoma

I agree. I think the committee is basically saying that if North Carolina or Florida win their conference championship game this weekend, then they are not automatically in the playoff.
These two teams have played poorly at times, played 2 FCS teams (UNC), barely beat Florida Atlantic, etc. So they haven't separated themselves over the course of the season, even if they do win the conference championship game. They may still get in, but it is not automatic.

You guys have the biggest alumni base in the country and are the only power 5 school in a state with 13 million people
Ohio State has always been the biggest yearly TV draw going back as long as I can remember
I am more shocked at MSU getting that pull

Neither UF or UNC will be in the playoff if they win Saturday. Stanford will take one spot and either tOSU or ND will take the other.

Honestly since conf championships seem to be so important how can they in good conscience not have all five represented.
Do I think the big ten is as good as the sec top to bottom no but I think all conf champions from each division are at least comparable to one another.

Dont be so sure that the conference championships seem to be so important. Jeff Long said last night that two teams have to be completely even for it to even be considered. UNC and Stanford could be screwed in this case if we lose or Clemson loses
Q: How does the committee deem one team better than another?
Long: In the committee's eyes, if a team has not clearly separated itself above another and they are indeed equal, then we apply those four criteria of conference champions, head-to-head, and those factors. So they don't come in until the committee reaches basically a deadlock and then we add in the conference championships.

just expand to 6, and have 1 and 2 get a first round bye...take all five conference champions plus 1
no byes... still has elements of being unfair with records and competition and such... Top 8 should go, 5 power conference champions and 3 at large selected by BCS formula and human voting weighted evenly. Could even drop one game from power 5 or better yet have a cross conference challenge involving the power 5...one game each year chosen by lottery pick.
