Good
- The defense played lights out for the first 55 minutes of the game, while the starters were in.
- We made a 56 yard FG, and didn't allow a kick or punt return.
-Barber looked like a workhorse that we could depend on. Similar to Tre Mason in a ton of aspects.
Bad
- JJ tried to force it over the middle a ton and made a few overthrows deep.
If someone would have told me our only concern after game 1 was Gus' offense, I'd have instantly said we are in for a good year.

Agree with Lanier except I liked the last play. Why risk a punt that can be blocked or returned? JJ should have thrown it further.
I also think you get a different perspective when you attend the game. From the stands the Defense was bringing it, offense needs to improve and I believe it will. Special teams were special.
Actually glad we did not beat them 38-10, the score was perfect unless you bet the Tigers.

I said last week that I was more concerned with our offense than the defense. WE have more talent on defense than we do on offense right now. Plus, we replaced 8 guys on offense. 8 !!!! Thats a lot of new guys in a complex offense. It is going to take some time. JJ is not a plug in player for Nick Marshall. He does not have the same skill set. Everything needs to change and it will.
Im my opinion, its easier to get better on defense early. The offense will come around. We just need to gel a little more on the offense line, cut down on some of the penalties and let JJ get his feet under him and get his head cleared of all the heisman bull shite.
I was very pleased at most of what I saw yesterday

I find it amusing you are suggesting JJ can't run based on the UL game.
I will concede the point if I don't see some running by 3-5 games in.

If he was going to throw it (which he shouldn't have), he should have thrown it downfield and way out of bounds.
He took the worst of 3 choices... he threw it up for grabs.

I finally watched it on TV this afternoon, and JJ didn't make a few mistakes...he mostly made mistakes. I didn't do the math, but very few of his passes were on, most receptions required the receiver adjusting to the ball. I saw very little of him progressing thru any reads and he looked the safety onto the receiver more than not. I'm not saying that the sky is falling...but that was abysmal.
Defense played tough (especially with Lawson and Matthews in) and the kickers were awesome. I'm hoping JJ will fix it. But then again, I thought Fraizer would fix it too.

Actually Frazier comparison sadly has entered my mind a few times. Sticking to one receiver and showing it the whole way.
No down votes from me. I too am hoping it was just first game and him trying to prove too much. We shall see, but it was uncomfortably familiar looking.

ETA Woops. Thought I was putting this in the injury thread.

If he really was telegraphing, we're in for a shitty season.

Gus flat out said he had reads to be made, but it did seem that he knew who he was going to throw it to off the snap. Man, I really hope Malzahn and Lashlee can get it together. I keep going back and forth from being worried and calm.

It looked like we didn't have progressions. I sure hope that's not the way Gus is coaching. I've questioned this in the past 2-3 years though.

Gus said that the reason Duke didn't get the ball thrown his way was precisely because JJ was making the reads and that he was double covered. My feeling is that Grantham was disguising coverages and JJ was getting frustrated and started trying to force it.

Yep. By this logic, Cam couldn't run either.

I don't know how much he was disguising stuff, but he basically had a deep cover 3 going all game. There was over the top help on everything because we're were only running 2 maybe 3 guys on routes so they could play under stuff, assuming the over the top help was there.
