I'm 6'1 but I only weigh 140. I have had some health issues and hospital stays. Been out for six months but can't gain weight. I'm ashamed of myself looking like a stick. I want to get up to 180. Any good advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

What does your doctor say?

Are you married? If not, marry someone who likes to cook (preferably good at it).
Or you could eat a lot of cereal. Takes great and is full of sugar.
A better option might be to eat a lot of peanut butter every day and workout right after eating it.

A lot of fast food and a sedentary lifestyle. You'll be fat as shite in no time.

McDonalds and Burger King. Couch and TV. No exercise except to walk to car and couch. Plenty of soda. Eat right before you go to sleep.
You will feel terrible...but you'll put on weight.

I recommend lots of beer (not light beer) and an office job. I know it works.

Try about 200g of protein per day plus a weight lifting routine. I'd recommend a personal trainer. Sitting around and eating shitty food will make you fat. Eating a healthy diet with lots of protein and a good workout program will get you toned.

If you're just talking strict weight gain and it doesn't matter if it's fat then do what I did in high school. For breakfast drink a Slim Fast and eat a breakfast burrito. Then go to Sonic and get a Super Sonic Cheeseburger several times a week. Eat a few spoon fulls of peanut butter before bed every night.
Your blood pressure and cholesterol will go through the roof but you'll gain wait.

Take naps during the day. Napping temporarily reduces your metabolism during and for a short duration after your nap so you don't burn as many calories.

Aside from the obvious weight lifting, mix a weight gainer shake using either ice cream or heavy cream. Do those 3 times a day........especially right before bed. This isn't your entire diet though. The shakes are in ADDITION to what you consume in regular food. Don't listen to the beer/pizza crowd. That'll just make you 6'1/150 with the only thing changing is the addition of a beer gut.

Peanut butter sandwiches right before bed. I ate two, but I was quite a bit taller. Don't make yourself miserably full, but obviously more is better in this case.

1. Sounds like you have a high metabolism. So don't listen to the pizza/sonic crowd. You'd gain weight, but your metabolism would burn it in a hurry.
20-60g Protein shakes 3x a day are the way to go. Red meat, carb loaded diet. Watch your triglyceride level though.

Thanks guys. I go to the doctor today. Would it be a bad idea to ask for steroids or hgh in order to get bigger? I don't want to be huge, I just want to gain 40 or 50 pounds v of good weight and rebuild the muscle that I lost. Thoghts? Thanks for not making fun of me.

Don't just eat crap. There is a healthy way to do this. As another poster mentioned earlier, increase your protein intake. Be sure you take in good fats as well. I would say start off at a 100mg and work your way up to 200mg per day. Do lots of push-ups too. Do as many as you can daily and try to top it the next day. Do pull ups as well. A good source of protein and good fats would be salmon, avocados, eggs. My go to meal is a California chicken sandwich that I make. Grilled chicken breast, bacon, provolone, onion, lettuce, tomato and guacamole. Its top notch

This shite right here:
TrueMass
There's 710 calories per shake. Supplement your daily meals with at least 2 of these, IMO.
You probably need to take in around 3,000-3,500 calories per day. Make sure you get at least 1-2g of protein per lb of body weight and probably around 2-3g of carbs per lb of body weight.
It goes without saying that you should hit the gym during this. You want to follow a pretty solid mass-gaining program. I suggest this one:
Arnold's Blueprint to Mass
I started working out and eating similar to what I've suggested here back in April and I've gained almost 20 lbs of lean muscle. I was around 160 when I started and now I hover around 178-180. I'm still gaining, too.
EDIT - Also you can follow some of the articles on this website:
LiftBigEatBig
It's a good place for solid, no bullshite information.
You're gonna have to work. If you've been a hardgainer your whole life then it's gonna be an uphill bitch of a climb to start gaining. Stick with it, though, and you'll see results.
EDIT AGAIN - Saw where you mentioned steroids. No. You don't need them. Steroids are only something you do once you've peaked and even then only after thorough research and a solid understanding of the risks involved. For now you should just hit the gym and start eating more.
