I also think the praise he gets for navigating the team in 2010 is overblown.
I will have to disagree with you there. If he gets all the criticism for the bad shite, you have to give the man credit for the good..
He also won a lot of big close games and did not lose his cool during. When Alabama was up 24-0, his demeanor did not change. A lot of coaches would have panicked

I think the issue that led to the downward spiral was poor production at the QB position.

EGO ----
Chiz felt he did not get the respect he deserved... It was Cam, it was Gus.
He got rid of Roof who was underrated.
He hired a terrible OC and inserted himself into the offense and Changed Our Offensive Philosophy ...
He lost the team, the private detectives that watched the players, discipline, practice, spice, etc.
the shootings had a huge impact on everyone, football was not important
As far as the assistants (it was more than one), Chiz caused a lot of those problems by meddling into everything.

Got to hand it to Rhoads - he took a 5-19 program and, after four years of hard work and determination, finally got it back to 5-19 again...

His buyout is 750K per year and he's there through 2021. $4.5M if they want to let him walk after this season

The birth of the short sleeved windbreaker-Act 1
Gene Chizik-"Gee, this wind breaker is great, but my arms are hot and i need to feel the rain on my head""Could you remove the sleeves and hood but leave a mock turtle neck?"
Wind breaker maker-"well, that kinda defeats the purpose of a wind breaker" " It is supposed to protect you from the elements, but we will do it if its what you want coach."
Gene Chizik-"Great!" "Could you sew an Auburn patch on a leather jacket like the Fonz used to wear also" "That'd be bitchin'!"

I believe he would have figured it out but it would have taken some time and we would have had to remove some asst coaches
Yeah no. He was a defensive head coach who had soft, terrible defenses. There was no way he would have figured it out to the point we would have had any true consistent success. The inmates were running the asylum under Chizik. And on top of that he ran off Gus because he couldn't handle not getting what he thought was his due for 2010. If he couldn't handle have a hotshot OC on staff he would have zero chance of success anywhere.

I'm still not sure how Jay Jacobs survived hiring and firing Chiz.

"I feel like at times I got tarred and feathered erroneously, because I think a lot of people didn't do their homework," Chizik told the AP. "There were a lot of assumptions made that were absolutely false and incorrect. I stand by everything that I did. I have absolutely nothing to hide and I never will because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I always did it right."
He seemed to be specifically talking about the off the field allegations that were cast on Auburn during his time (HBO, Selena Roberts, etc).
From the original story. LINK
quote:Can't say I disagree with him on that point.
His tenure also had off-field turmoil, including an NCAA investigation of Newton's recruitment and a report alleging academic fraud and payments to athletes. Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs disputed that report in April 2013 after an internal investigation and defended the coach he had recently fired as "a man of the utmost character and integrity."

But in all seriousness he gets credit for holding the team together through the media shite storm and getting us the national title. For that, I will always be grateful.

definitely

He said he "needed to step back" to focus on his family, passing on offers to be a defensive coordinator and some head-coaching discussions.
This is interesting. I thought part of the buyout contract was he must actively look for jobs. I would think if he was offered a job and didnt accept, would be against it. or at least AU should be off the hook for the offered salary

I saw Van Gorder out shopping a few weeks back. it kind of caught me off guard.
