What is your honest opinion of what happened with Chizik?

There is a small statement from Chizik on 247 and it brought me back to his time here at Auburn. What happened?

Genes Statement

quote:

Gene Chizik stands by his tenure at Auburn, claiming "I always did it right."

"I feel like at times I got tarred and feathered erroneously, because I think a lot of people didn't do their homework," Chizik told the AP. "There were a lot of assumptions made that were absolutely false and incorrect. I stand by everything that I did. I have absolutely nothing to hide and I never will because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I always did it right."

There's no question Chizik was masterful in his handling of the 2010 team that won the national championship. However, there were clearly issues during his last two seasons, which included 12 blowout losses. His fourth and final team in 2012 finished with a 3-9 record, the worst at Auburn in 60 years and was outscored 150-21 by Texas A&M, Georgia and Alabama in his final three games, falling 63-21 to the Aggies, 38-0 to the Bulldogs and 49-0 to Alabama.

Personally, I have always liked Chizik and still respect him a lot. I like the way he handled himself and our program for the most part. I will always love him for what he did in 2010. He was a super, on the field, coach. He kept things together when most team would have crumbled.

But what happened? Did we pull the plug too fast. Not looking at what Gus has done but he rebounded decent in 2011. We had lost a lot. It would have been a tough deal for any coach. 2012 was terrible but was it all on him?

I dont notice as much of the "thugish" behavior since Gus has been here and the players seem to be keeping out of trouble. Did Gene just let these guys get too wild? It is an interesting thing and we may not know the answers.

It is puzzling.

He lost control of the locker room once he thought he'd been cast into immortality by winning a national championship. There's so much that happened in such a short time that led to his dismissal that I just don't feel like type my thoughts on it right now

I honestly feel like CGC put our program is the worst state of uncertainty I've seen since I've been a serious fan. We're lucky we still aren't rebuilding from the damage he caused.

I think it's telling too that Gus left to go to ASU.

I think everyone knows there were issues. The question is, what?. We lost about 40 people from our team between 2010 and 2011. That was a huge impact. But 2011 was not horrible like 2012. There had to be some inside issues that we dont know about. Gene seemed like a fair guy and at times, got on the players.

And I dont really take Gus leaving as some kind of sign. Coaches leave for head coaching jobs all the time. It was a move in the right direction for Gus.

But 2011 was not horrible like 2012.
We were three scores away from having a losing season.

USC
Utah State
MSU

2011 was not a good team. Arkasas, Alabama, UGA, & LSU all kicked the shite out of that team.

The thing is, those close games we won in 2011 were losses in 2012.

Clemson
LSU
Vandy

Bowl eligible with those close wins.

Ole Miss and Arkansas were close games up until the 4th quarter too until everything fell apart.

I think he is a great human being. I just don't think he is a good HC. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I will always pull for him.

As far as the off the field problems....I think that had to do more with some of his asst's wanting to be buddies with the players instead of being disciplinary figures. The players just weren't held accountable for things and kept pushing the envelope.

Man, we can say that about every year just about. Both ways. Not really a indication of the coach. Remember that we lost 40 guys that year. Thats a ton of people. We were not great but not horrible.

I am leaning this way too. It seemed like the players few privileged and entitled. I am not sure he every brought them back down to earth after 2010. Kind of a free for all.

You can talk about the 40 players we lost, not sure what happened there, but the team he did put on the field was undisciplined and had atrocious fundamentals. Even in 2009, tackling and basic fundamental football took a huge step back from the year before.

Auburn was a bad football team every year except 2010.

FWIW, from what I was told by a starter on those teams, this was a lot of the issue. Apparently, the locker room was split between an assistant and Chizik and punishment was not given out equally when players got in trouble.

I think Chizik is a good guy, but just not able to handle the duties of being a HC. Hope he does well at UNC.

I feel like he lost the team a bit too much. The players used and abused him to a point there was no coming back.

I think he tried to find random solutions to problems/adversities to a fault.

I left the Utah game early. I missed the comeback. I told my son that even if we managed to win, we didn't deserve it. Biggest letdown in Auburn football imo.

I did not leave. I was there till the end. But my section, which is the letterman section, cleared out as well. Over half the people were gone

It was a disappointing game for sure but we actually played decent the next week.

What was odd about the Utah st game was how he got pushed around. The beat our arse all game up front

This is all correct. My one source a former player and is still working with the team said the same thing Catfish.

One word discipline. In my opinion we won 2010 on the leftover discipline instilled by Tubbs in those seniors.

The player I know said it got to the point where he was asking himself why he was killing himself in practice/workouts when a bunch of people weren't. He has since told me that as soon as Gus got there, it was a totally different situation.

Best thing Gus did was clean house top to bottom.

Yeah, it was like that all year. And the following year too.
quote:

Gave up over 300 yards rushing, 500 total yards.

Got out-gained by MSU by 150 yards (381-531).

And won on the last play of the game to a 6-6 (2-6) MSU team. At home.

Decent

2010 would have saved him but the off the field issues marred Auburn's reputation on a national scale. A lot of Auburn fans would tell you that they didn't really enjoy 2010 because the team was constantly blasted by the media over the investigation and Cam Newton.
