I don't. Not at his age, not with our offense. A sure thing would be hiring a guy who has been the DC for a fast paced team for years and who did well when ball control isn't a priority. Chavis running our defense is like getting a VP at Ford to run Twitter. It is a risk.
Ball control may have been a priority for the LSU offense, but it often wasn't a reality. In 2009, LSU was ranked 107 in time of possession. Chavis still had the #26 Total Defense, and the #11 Scoring Defense. A year later, LSU was #57 in TOP, while Chavis had the #12 Total D, and the #11 Scoring D.
Even during the great defense year of 2011, LSU was only #26 in TOP.
In 2013, LSU TOP: #57, Total D/Scoring D: #15/#21
In 2014, LSU TOP: #9, Total D/Scoring D: #9/#5
LSU had elite TOP in just ONE season of Chavis' tenure.
Also, let's take a look at how Chavis did at Tennessee.
In 2008, the Vols had the #3 Total Defense, and the #10 Scoring Defense. What was their TOP ranking? #98
In 2007, their TOP ranking was even worse, at #103, but Chavis still finished 70/61 in Total/SCoring D.
2006 - TOP #105, Total D/Scoring D #50/#33
2005 - TOP #73, Total D/Scoring D #7/#16
And that's as far back as the NCAA website keeps the TOP stat.
His defensive rankings have ALWAYS outperformed his teams' TOP, often by huge margins. Point being, there is AMPLE evidence to suggest that Chavis isn't dependent on a ball control offense.

Chavis doesn't have to give us a top 30 def, they just have to have strong fundamentals, play hard, knock some heads and force turnovers. Instead of running around lost.
We only forced like 6 turnovers last year and Armani had 3 INT's.

Mirth has some perspective. PREACH!
Spav was handcuffed and Chavis is going to get the most out of our players, he makes it simple and turns athletes into warriors

5 INT (Watts x3, Harris, Everett)
5 Forced Fumbles (Burns x2, Alaka x2, Raven)
7 Fumble Recoveries (Harris x2, Washington, Williams, Obioha, Raven, Honeycutt)

I can't do anything but to this post. Great stuff, this just became our best thread this offseason.

So we forced 10 turnovers the entire season.
That's sad.
That's sad.

Putting up a top 30 offense despite using a Soph QB who turned out to be a lush of limited ability, and switching mid-season to a true Fish, is actually not a bad performance.
That's true, but we could easily be top 10.

It's tough to judge Spav considering what he had to work with.
I think the criticism is fair considering how many weapons he has and how vanilla his play calling was. I really think he's trying to outsmart himself. He knows how to call plays well, but he just thinks to himself, "No, they'll see that coming. I'm going to spend an entire half lulling them to sleep just to set up one play."

A large part was probably Kenny's struggle with 15+ yard throws. That kind of limits your scheming

I don't buy that. Ole Miss for example, we consistenly repeated our standard series: 1st down, bubble screen. 2nd down, stretch run with Tra or Brandon. 3rd down, throw up a prayer to the sideline, 4th down punt. (One of these days I'm going to sit down with a pen and paper and tally up the number of drives that we had over the season that went exactly like that.)
Now that we've given them a 21 point cushion for the 2nd half, we start throwing intermediate passes over the middle and actually get something going, but it's too late. We don't have enough time to make up the difference and still almost did until the 75 yard interception return.

We always seem to do this with Ole Miss though. Both games we played there we kept them in it with turn-overs etc. The one here we did not execute and the last turnover was the clincher.

I miss Kliff lol
the truth is the same people complaining about Spav's playcalling were complaining about Kliff's the first 2/3ds of 2012 and now reminisce
For some reason the monday morning QBs tend to think Spav walks up to a chalkboard, diagrams a play and everyone just does that. Football and playcalling isn't rocket science but it's a lot deeper than that. The coaches all meet for a weekly gameplan. They discuss what plays to run in situations, vs personnel groups, etc. They all have input. Then they practice those plays all week and make subtle changes to attack identified opponent weaknesses. Each coach has the freedom to make changes for their own personnel group.
So there simply isn't one singular coach, and the same coaches supporting Kliff (incl Sumlin) supported both McKinney and Spav. Yes, Spav holds the playsheet, but it's the agreed upon plays in a format that takes into account all the potential factors and situations discussed in game planning.
Our problems last year and what this quote likely refers to, had to do with disunity in the coaches meetings. Personalities are personalities and sometimes over time good chemistry fades.

I hate to claim to fix one of your posts tmc, but surely this had something to do with with it?

Success certainly breeds good chemistry and Johnny brought success to most playcalls, so you can't completely discount it. But Kliff was universally hailed by the other coaches as a genius and they all deferred to him (maybe the success in 12 was why but they did).
It can be hard on personalities when you bring a kid in from the outside and a year later promote him to be your boss

Honestly, as long as Spav keeps getting these 5* qbs he'll have a spot on our coaching staff. He should just be our qb coach for the next 20 years and have us pay him like a OC. I really want Tate Martell. If he lands him we will have our qb situation figured out for about the next 6-8 years

Best Case:
Kliff gets canned at TTU
Wants to stay in Texas and comes back
Spav works as a qb coach and recruits like a wizard

Lol trust me man, you don't have to explain football not play calling to me

Lol you guys are being silly, Spav will be a head coach in the next 5 years. If we win the sec, make the playoff, or have a couple 11-12 win seasons he may be gone in 3.
There are plenty of teams who wanted him last year, but no one big enough to shake him loose. Not to mention if you fail as a HC, and only have one year of OC on your resume the choices get thinner.
