Southwest Airlines.

Southwest Airlines. Easily.
I will never fly another airline again as long as I don't have to and SWA has a flight to where I want to go.
Prices are unbeatable, reward flights build quickly, no blackout dates, flight attendants have a sense of humor, and no issues with bags.
I booked 4 flights for my wife and I (2xNYC and 2xRiviera de Maya) and only spent points this year.

What's the main beef with ATL's airport? Size?
Most people who hate on Hartsfield just aren't used to the sheer size and amount of people there.

Yeah people probably just don't like the size of the ATL airport. It can be a bit of a pain.
Delta is on time more often than any airline in North America other than Alaska I think.

This
Flying SWA to FL next week for our anniversary vacay--cannot wait for the uptick in service.
Flew Frontier last month (horrid) and United (meh) before that (booked by my prospective employer for my interview). Will never fly another airline again if I have the choice.
Racking up points like you, ol' sport

For some reason both times I went through there (ROTC-related trips), the A/C was on the fritz in large swaths of Hartsfield. In the summertime. Made for a sweaty trek in uniform
Most of my bad memories of the airport are based on those bad experiences. Just shitty luck on my part, though

Southwest would be my #1 if they did not have so many delays.

They are all the handmaidens of Satan.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Well it's that or drive the 16 hour drive from here to Tampa by myself. I'd likely break it up into an 8 hour drive, stop for the night, then another 8 hours in. By the time I do that with gas and lodging it makes more sense to just fly.

So let me ask this, if I go through Delta ATL about how much time should I shoot for when it comes to layover time to get from gate to gate? What's the main beef with ATL's airport? Size?
Where do we start... bags not making a connection, bags lost, delayed flights, canceled flights, missed connections, changed flight times, etc. I've experienced them all in ATL. The airport is not that hard to get around, it's everything else that can happen. Fly direct on SWA. You'll be happy you did.

Since you are flying out of SDF I would suggest Southwest first. When Delta had their hub in NKY it was worth it to drive to Cincy as they had non stops daily to Tampa and Fort Lauderdale (FU to Mitch McConnell for f*cking that hub up). As for American out of SDF, f*ck them and the horse they rode in on. If we ever meet in person I can give you a horror story or two. As stated by others, if you pick up Delta in Lou or Lex they will route you through ATL and they are getting like the old Eastern in lost luggage.
Seriously, when I fly Delta I just carry on or pick up what I need at a local Wal Mart when I land.

Yeah. Do Southwest and pay for priority boarding.
I've been stuck on American and United for the past few weeks and I'm on an unbroken string of 15 flights delayed or cancelled.

Atlanta is just huge and the airport can be crowded. At least transiting ATL you dont have to through security. Its not bad. Airlines by law have to have a minimum connection time, which is normally an hour. You should be fine.
Ive been flying Delta at Platinum status for many years with minor problems.

I've got from gate to gate in under 20 minutes, splitting concorses and never losing bags..

For that itinerary, Southwest will likely be your best option.

An hour is probably suggested just because Delta seems to land late so 1/2 hour for that and a 1/2 to get from concourse to concourse. I always seem to get the connectors to the outlier concourse.

Southwest is still the most reliable, but they aren't the same airline they were 20 years ago. Before they became a major carrier they were truly a unique company.
