Thoughts on Butch Jones Coaching Abilities

Now that he has 25 games at Tennessee under his belt, what is the overall consensus regarding Butch Jones ability as a game planner, game day coach, talent developer, etc? Not recruiting, but actual on field coaching?

Ask me after this season.

Well that and I think he has some great things going for him. Everything about Tennessee has improved, especially play, since he arrived. The record with the Dooley scrubs wasn't any better but the play was despite playing those scrubs and having no depth anywhere.
Even so, 'ask me after this season.' There's still a helluva lot to evaluate.

He's lost games he shouldn't have lost (Vandy '13, UF '14) and won games he shouldn't have won (USC '13, '14).
He's came close to beating a significantly, at the time, more talented team in UGA, both years.
He's had some blowouts (Oregon '13, Oklahoma '14, Ole Miss '14). These are just off the top of my head.
Overall, as of right now from what I've seen, I think he's an average in-game coach. But, he steadily will win 8-9 games a year because he's not awful and will have top 5-10 talent every year.
I would bet that he will win an SEC East championship while he's at Tennessee. That's not much to some of you, but it'd finally be nice to win something of significance, considering we haven't since '07.
Could he could win an SEC title and get into the CFB Playoff? Sure. Are the odds against him? Of course.

That's a pretty damn good honest assessment

So Tennessee's version of present day Mark Richt
Posted on 4/16/15 at 6:07 pm to SummerOfGeorge
If that's what you want to compare him to, so be it.
I'm not sure how good of an in-game coach Richt is, but I'm a little surprised he hasn't been able to take advantage of the SEC East sucking for two or three years with the talent he has.

I definitely wasn't saying it in a derogatory way. Richt has won a lot of games the last 5 years and been within 5 yards of an SEC and National Title. Could do much worse.

He beats shitty teams, and gets blown the eff out by decent teams

Great coach from Sunday to Friday.

Run along, plebeian. We don't need you or your band of poors and never have beens derailing this fine gentleman's thread.

Maybe. That's why this season is so important.
With the aforementioned Vandy game we were forced to play a true freshman and our only WR threat went down in the first few minutes. Our defense sucked that year and we had no pass rush. Our coaches went conservative after North went down but a few key penalties also cost us as did a call. For example, without Pig Howard's block in the back we win that game despite going concervative. We also had no threat at RB. It's hard to win when you have no defense, no passing game, and no running game save for your true freshman QB who was playing hurt.
With UF last year our OL sucked donkey balls to put it lightly as did Worley who had nothing left after the UGA game. He was sacked or hurried constantly. At one point, UF only had to rush a few players to get to the QB. We had to rely on dink and dunk passing and UF knew it and their secondary ate us alive not only because they were good but also because they knew what was coming due to our offensive limitations. Despite all that UF only won by a point BUT as a fan it was frustrating as hell. Worley didn't play like he had the game before at UGA. Fans hate to admit it but UF was more talented and not by a little but by a whole lot. Even so the OL cost us that game.
So again, the jury is still out. He could very well be a Marc Richt type but he could also be better than that or even worse. Getting more talent and enough depth to where you're not looking for warm bodies will tell the tale.

'14 Blowouts (3 TDs+):
@Oklahoma (8-5) - L - 10-34
@Ole Miss (9-4) - L - 3-34
'14 Non-Blowouts & Close Games (Less than 3 scores):
vs. Missouri (11-3) - L - 21-29
vs. UF (7-5) - L - 9-10
UGA (10-3) - L - 32-35
'Bama (12-2) - L - 20-34
'13 Blowouts:
@Oregon (11-2) - L - 10-59
vs. Auburn (12-2) - L - 23-55
@'Bama (11-2) - L - 10-45
@Missouri (12-2) - L - 3-31
'13 Non-Blowouts & Close Games:
@UF (4-8) - L - 17-31
vs. UGA (8-5) - L - 31-34 (OT)
vs. Vanderbilt (9-4) - L - 10-14
So, in two seasons, he's gotten "blown out" by teams with a combined 63-17 record.
I guess those teams are "decent," then.

And don't forget the last touchdown was in garbage time.
So your "savior" lost to 4-8 Florida with their back up quarterback by double digits. Wow. Y'all keep throwing all of your chips in on Butchy though

I'm not going to argue semantics as I don't really care but you don't have to lose by 3 TDs to get blown out. A good example: Ole Miss beat Tennessee 34-3 and Texas A&M 35-21 but Tennessee actually gave us the tougher game.
Anyways, it took Butch 2/3rds of the year before he realized his best QB was on the bench so take it for what it's worth

His in-game coaching is awful... He'll start winning more games bc of talent level, but when all things are equal he's mediocre.
Deboard was a snoozer hire that could backfire.
