I don't like one and done. I think it takes an amateur system that is already highly suspect and makes it even more dubious. Players essentially attend class for one semester.
But I have defended Kentucky and will continue to do so against the hypocrisy of the critics. I criticize the SYSTEM, not Kentucky. I find it laughable that so many fans of other teams hate on Kentucky for the sole reason that UK has more of the one and dones and are more successful with it.
For the critics, particularly Big Ten fans, please note that you are not less of a whore because you only sleep with two strange men a week while your friend sleeps with four.

I'm so glad I'm not a college basketball fan. how the frick do people invest themselves in a shitty sport like that. why not just watch the NBA instead?

The NBA is a far superior product, and there's really no comparison.
NCAA Basketball has the most exciting playoffs in sports. While the NBA plays a series of games that usually has the best team win, the NCAA's real "one-and-done" is what happens when the better team overall is the worse team that one night.
I a very glad these kids come and play in college before the pros. I remember back when the Lebrons of the world went straight to the NBA and college basketball was turning into college baseball (aka a niche sport). Anything that can keep the talent in the game for however long it a good thing.
Hardcore fans follow the team no matter what. The casual fans follow talent, and you will drive them off without talent.

Good point.
Let me amend that to say "Appear to attend class just enough to stay eligible for one semester, then don't even bother in the second half."

Because the NBA hasn't been any fun to watch since Kobe and Shaq played together. It's all offense and no defense. There's also no emotion put in any of the games until it is game 6 or game 7 in the playoffs. If you want to see a sport where the strategy is "roll the ball out there and let them play" then watch the NBA. The only team that hasn't been like that in recent memory is the Spurs.

The only top level team.
The Pacers are pretty good about playing as a team, but right now they suck and Roy Hibbert can't figure out if he's Hakeem Olijuwan or a dead tree in shorts.

They kind of have to bother with the second half in other to keep the team from getting hit with APR penalties. They do take online courses instead of regular classes in order to do so while pursuing the draft in the spring.
But now, please don't be naive enough to think that it's any worse than the football player who is undecided until his sophomore year and then majors in communications but never graduates.

A few reasons why "one and done" is hurting college basketball:
1. It's a mentality that almost every relatively big time recruit has that he is good enough to only have to play one year of college basketball. That's not just confined to the top 10 or so player who actually ARE that good, but players who are ranked in the 40's, 50's and 60's coming out of HS. Thus, you see many good players leave either after their 1st or at most 2nd year of college ball because they see staying any longer than that as almost an admission that they aren't as good as maybe they thought they were.
When you continue to lose good college players prematurely, the quality of the game suffers. Just imagine if some of these guys who leave knowing they will likely be drafted in the 2nd round (if at all) decided to stay.
2. In the 80's you had a lot of GREAT college players (Ralph Sampson, Patrick Ewing, etc.) all stay at least through their junior year. It gave teams a chance to build rivalries which was great for fans.

It is worse. You bring up an excellent example of the hypocrisy of college football, but on the subject of many college athletes not being "real" students, I think it's fair to say that the one and dones are even more of a farce than the two and dones in football.

The Kentucky vs. Louisville rivalry hasn't suffered at all in light of early entries for either team. If anything it's been taken to a whole new level with both consistently having some decent tournament runs where they've ended up facing each other no less.

You had that mentality coming out of high school. And there were some NBA teams dumb enough to draft some of those kids too.

Where the one and done really hurts is at the top level. Think about what next year would look like if Duke and UK had their guys coming back. Talk about hype going into the season. also would increase interest in the regular season.
Rule changes can improve the level of play overall.

No it doesn't.
NFL - and it's not even close.
Hell, even soccer is more exciting.
Just because stupid rules allow for more upsets in the early rounds doesn't make it more exciting, just more unpredictable due to stupid rules.

Less than 100 players have been one and done in the last 10 years. If College Basketball is that fragile, that less then 1% of the incoming Freshmen cause the game to die, then the game is not very strong anyway.

There was plenty of team play with UK this season. Was one of the most unselfish teams I've watched play in a long time. This criticism is a bit ignorant knowing that.
maybe i should have worded that differently however i meant team i guess more as in a team that played together for more than one season not some all star team slapped together by some greasy used car salesman.

I hope they don't try to force these kids to work for free any longer than the 1 years they are already forcing when they stop allowing them to jump to the NBA from high school.
