Can I answer this in 2-3 years? I like Bruce, but he does have baggage. I had never heard of AJ before our coaching search started because I have never cared about the NBA and I don't watch ESPN unless there's a live game I want to see. The more I hear about him and his career, the more I like him. From what I can tell, he did a pretty good job in the NBA. The Nets were a dumpster fire, but they were improving each year, and the Mavs had great regular seasons but just got unlucky in the playoffs his last two seasons. I like how he plans to play an aggressive style of ball. Recruiting shouldn't be too hard for him. He's got some good AAU contacts and Pettway knows everything about recruiting in Alabama. Recruits know who he is and most guys can relate to him one way or another.

They're both very good, but I'll take the coach without the NCAA baggage every time... especially at Alabama. Both are good fits at their schools and I do not mean that as a knock on Auburn.

Avery Johnson is a pretty decent long shot to succeed.

For a college program, I'd go with Bruce Pearl in a heartbeat.

There are really no organizational similarities between a pro team and a college program, and honestly, the game itself is very different.

Johnson knows next to nothing about the college game.

Pearl was great at Tennessee, a legit basketball program. But now he is at Auburn, a shite show where his career will die as Avery Johnson leaves him in the dust.

Neither has had any real success at their new positions to this point.

I like the Avery Johnson hire for Bama a lot, but I would definitely take Bruce Pearl if given the choice right now. Hopefully Avery Johnson can prove me wrong over the next few years.

Alabama has traditionally been a better basketball program than Auburn so I think Avery Johnson has an advantage in that respect. On the flip side Auburn's newish arena helps Pearl's cause a lot though.

If roles were reversed, I would be calling Bruce a cheater while I secretly liked him, and praising that Auburn was able to bring in a coach who knows the pro game and can use that in recruiting. Personally, I am just excited to have something to do between NSD and spring practice other than watch you idiots troll each other. I really enjoyed basketball this season for the first time ever and we were terrible.

Tricky question

Bruce is a proven commodity, but an established ceiling. He won't get much better than a flirt with the Final Four.

Avery Johnson is a gamble, but with a sky high ceiling if he can make it work in Tuscaloosa.

Wanna play it safe, take Bruce, wanna bet the farm, take AJ.

No brainer, I would choose Bruce Pearl.... The man took historically mediocre Tennessee to a #1 ranking for one week and an Elite 8. That's an amazing accomplishment for a place like Tennessee.

This is one stupid thread. Bama fans are happy with their coach and Auburn is happy with their coach. Both are charismatic men who will promote basketball in this state like it has never been promoted before. How can you compare who is better at this point. One played basketball professionally in the NBA until he was 40 years old, then went straight to coaching in the NBA. He has had success and failures in the NBA like pretty much every coach that has ever coached in the NBA. The other has coached at some level of college his entire coaching career, been blacklisted for getting a kid to admit something that didn't happen, taping it and turning it over to the NCAA to get another school in trouble, and was fired from an SEC school for knowingly committing an NCAA violation then lying to the NCAA and asking the kids father to lie as well. Pearl has the college coaching experience, but both know the game of basketball and the question of which is a better college coach can't be answered at this moment. I think AJ deserves to build a body of work at this level before we tackle this question.

Pearl easily, he is a top 5 SEC coach. Avery Johnson is going to be a huge failure.

In a one on one match? AJ all the way. In anything to do with being a college basketball coach; Mr. Bruce.
