....but what we need is not just a big hire...what Bama needs is a strategic 5-year plan as to how we take the Bama baketball program to elite status....a good starting place would be plans for a new arena,,,,,so if AJ moves on in five years, we have the program positioned for better things.
Exactly. And he may move on or back to the NBA if successful.

One of the more fun series to watch was the Wizards being the giant killers and taking out the Mavs in the first round of what I think was the 2007 play offs. The Mavs only lost what, like 15 games in the reg. season?
Lol you so dumb
East vs West in 1st round game...oh ok

How many colleges have coaches who have been to the NBA finals as a HC?

I think it's a good hire, mostly because it'll generate publicity for the program...Avery is getting back into coaching. It's risky though because he's a wildcard when it comes to the college game and building a program and recruiting. He's got nothing substantial to point to on the college level in order to convince a high schooler to play for him at Bama.
He was fired from two NBA jobs for lack of success. He was given a pretty stacked roster in Dallas but really doesn't have anything to show for it. Perhaps he'll find success in college.

He will need strong assistants. Chris Jan's would be nice.

You'd trade Jones for Johnson right now. Don't act like you wouldn't.

For Bama this hire is more than X & Os. It's about getting the program over the hump and help with publicity, as well.
Avery Johnson is very personable, easy to like, and should be able to recruit.

Should be able to recruit New Orleans effectively also. Played on some GREAT St Aug teams.

Gives us immediate recruiting inroads to Louisiana and Texas. Huge.

The issue with Jones is although he lands top recruits, it seems like he doesn't do a lot with them.
Nothing is known about Avery though. Give it a year and we'll see who appears more geared for success.

From a Bama standpoint; he is the anti Anthony Grant when it comes to emotion. The fanbase will encourage that. We like emotion out of our coaches.

It will be an interesting hire. You make good points but his style of coaching also may fit much better in the college game.

Definitely. I don't know enough about basketball Xs and Os to make a reasonable estimate on how his style will translate into the college game.

Doesn't need any substantial college level play to win recruits, at this point.

Johnson would be a terrible hire as would Prohm. Oh well, the SEC can still count on Alabama basketball as being average at best

Who is available that would be a better option than Johnson?

Brad Underwood or Michael White. Avery is way too risky imo.
