I still would like to hear that we at least contacted Krystkowiak.

Yea a former nba coach of the year would be an awful hire. There is no way a 17 year old kid would want to play for him.

I would be worried about giving a coach his first ncaab job. A lot of growing pains + a rebuilding job. Could get ugly.

Hey, I am Avery Johnson. A guy who has already been fired by two NBA teams and a guy nobody else wants as their head coach
Posted on 4/5/15 at 8:58 am to auburnphan23
Has he even been trying to get a coaching job? His son is just graduating from high school this year.

"Hey, I'm Bruce Pearl. I got stuck coaching a team who has an overall win percentage of barely .500 because nobody else would touch me."

It could get ugly with Prohm or Marshall too. Coaching in the sec and recruiting top 50 players is totally different than coaching at their level. If everyone is a risk I want the guy who at least sends the message that Alabama is taking basketball seriously.

I am pretty sure AJ would have taken the Texas job before Bammer, but they apparently never gave him the time of day. Texas athletic director has a NBA background having worked for the Portland Trailblazers

Pearl won't win at Auburn, it's the worst program in our conference.

Definitely. Would rather get coaches that don't need on the job training.

i would be thrilled to get AJ.... he is a career NBA guy but a big name and I don't know how well he could recruit but it would be a big step forward aster the Marshall debacle.

Now I just worry what salary he is going to demand. We offered Marshall way more than he is worth and I would bet AJ will want similar cash. Sounds like Battle is not seeing eye to eye on money.
Also, lets say AJ goes to the sweet 16 a couple times in the next 5 years. Is he right back in the nba or at a duke? If he actually succeeds at bama combined with his nba resume he would be considered a top 5 coach.
I still say we hire him but I dont know if we can keep him if he recruits and performs as well as I think he will.

Exactly. A big part of a successful hire is getting someone who will energize and excite the fanbase. Also someone who should be able to recruit. If Anthony Grant and his stoic personality could land decent players than AJ's charismatic personality should be able to kick it up a notch. Put a solid staff of assistants around him and it would be a significant upgrade over CAG.
It's also hilarious and predictable to see some of the usual suspects here trying to act like AJ would be a complete disaster of a hire. He could end up sucking but his hiring will make a splash and energize the fanbase which is much needed right now.

AJ would probably easily be the biggest name we've ever hired for basketball.

@ESPNAndyKatz: Source: Avery Johnson reps, Alabama reps expected to discuss a possible deal as early as tonight. Source said Johnson wants the challenge.

Agree.....its a big time hire and loved Avery when he was with the Mavs.
....but what we need is not just a big hire...what Bama needs is a strategic 5-year plan as to how we take the Bama baketball program to elite status....a good starting place would be plans for a new arena,,,,,so if AJ moves on in five years, we have the program positioned for better things.
