I had a reply all typed out, but when I clicked "preview" and read what I had written, it looked eerily similar to something CGSC would write, with stats and year-by-year breakdowns, so I decided to erase it. There is only room for one CGSC on here

Kennedy should not be allowed to coach year 5.
I don't know that I disagree, I just don't get the angst. Other than BCG and Metcalf A&M has never been good.
quote:
If you want to compare him to Shelby, go for it, but take into account what type of program Shelby took over and what type of success he had prior to having a dry spell, AND as you already know the tournament was smaller and thus harder to get in to.
I only brought up Shelby because of CGSC's comment about 4 years outside the tournament being reason for firing. Well then... guess who else should have been fired? And Shelby had a not-so-impressive 4 year run to end his career at A&M (when the field was 64). At A&M I'm not sure making the NCAA's every 4 years (as if that would satisfy CGSC) is a reasonable expectation. (Oh shite, I just channeled Hyman.)

greenbastard:
And that's part of the problem. One guy goes down, and the entire team goes down. He has had 4 years to build and develop a solid team, but all he has managed to do is ride the talent of Daniel House this year. I truly believe that if we didn't have House this year, this would have been another 14 win; CBI year.
I would guess the 14 win season is accurate w/o House. I don't get why some are up in arms about that, though. Without Acie Law A&M doesn't make the NCAA's in 2006. With House this year, the Aggies do.

BK just seems to rely a bit too much on pure talent than he does on coaching.
A common complaint about John Calipari!
I'm on the fence and wouldn't mind him being fired, IF we have a suitable replacement in mind. And there's the rub. I don't know why a good coach would want to go to A&M with less than 4K in attendance at a second round NIT game.
ETA: By way of comparison, LaTech had over 7000 for their first round game at a school with less than 1/4 the enrollment in a town with less than 1/5 the population (MUCH less if you include Bryan). I'd say hire Mike White, but I'm not sure A&M deserves him.
I tried to get LaTech daughter riled up with a bet and bought a damn LaTech hat I had no use for in case they won, but she wouldn't bite. Blame this awful season on me.

Something we can all agree on.

From 14 wins to 21 is not improving?
We finished the season with zero wins over top 50 RPI teams. We finished the season with 3 wins over top 75 RPI teams (LSU finished ranked 54 and Florida finished ranked 71).
So no, 21 wins isn't impressive given that he almost exclusively feasted on a bunch of teams that ranged from awful to below average. In fact, given the circumstances, that's pathetic. By that I mean that this was year 4 and he had a good roster. From an experience perspective, the team had tons of upperclassmen. From a talent perspective, the team had numerous 4 stars (Caruso, Robinson, and Trocha) + a 5 star (House), not to mention a few lower ranked recruits that have proven their worth (Jones and Roberson).
But that's Billy Kennedy. He could walk outside in a tit storm and get hit in the face with a dick.

That's the main problem with the majority of college teams that lose their only NBA level talent. Add in the fact that we are not a traditional bball power and it makes it that much harder b/c odds are high we won't have the depth to deal with such a catastrophic loss.
If Aggie basketball was a college football team it would be a mix of NC State and Maryland. Do you ever expect much of them?

A bowl win is a reasonable expectation for them.
Kennedy's results are the equivalent of making 1 bowl in 4 years and losing it.

3. Horrible coaching
To me it wouldn't be boring basketball if more than one guy (sometimes two guys) could shoot. I'm fine with focusing on defense. I actually prefer it, to tell you the truth. But you have to be able to put it in the bucket and we saw some fugly bad field goal percentages this year.
What else I saw way too much of were some stupid poor decisions by our players when on offense. Going to the net when they should pass and passing when there's nothing in the way of the net... Players from top to bottom made decisions on par with 7th graders. And Kennedy seldom seemed to notice. If he did then he damned sure failed to do anything about it.

Season was over as soon as House went down.
He is the only guy on the team that can consistently create his own shot and also hit 3's at a good rate.
Most of the time he was the only guy who could shoot, period.

Ain't this the truth? I read this whole thread from top to bottom. I started off not really giving a shite. There for a while I was almost worked up. Then I didn't give a shite, anymore.
Almost all of us would cut off his left thumb for 5 football natties over the next 25 years. How many of you really (and I mean REALLY) give a damn about bouncy ball?
Sure, it would be great to win some football natties and some baseball natties and then throw on a few basketball natties from time to time. We'd love to shut the corndogs up. We'd like to have an athletic department on par with Florida's. But do we REALLY REALLY want it? Have we ever?
Maybe staying "cheap" for one more year isn't really going to hurt any of us.

This is a reverse troll and I like it.

Not really since its a hell of a lot harder to get into the NCAA or NIT tourneys than it is a bowl. (not counting CBI or CIT since you have made it clear in the past that you don't think they are worth noting)
There are 76 bowl slots for 128 FBS schools. P5 and most G5 members need only go .500 to be virtually guaranteed a bowl slot.
For the NCAA/NIT tourneys there are 100 slots for 351 schools. A minimum of 32 teams will get auto bids from winning the conference. The few regular season conference champs that are left out of the NCAA get auto bids to the NIT. So at best there are just 68 available postseason spots for the remaining 319 teams.

Obviously Kennedy has enough talent coming in that even when he coaches them down to his level, we will still make the tournament. What a coach!

We'll see. Next year's OOC and in-conf schedules are a lot harder, Auburn is bringing in some ballers and are actually receiving coaching, LSU is bringing in the #1 player in the country (though their coach sucks), Florida will be a lot better, Mississippi State might be better (though I expect they're a year or 2 away at min).
We could improve and still not win more than 18 or 19 games, which will make for another bubble-tastic finish. And if we're coming down the stretch on the bubble, and it's on Kennedy to close it out... well let's put it this way. I wouldn't trust him to seal the deal when trying to sell Krispy Kremes during Fiesta Week in San Antonio.

Has he been fired? I searched and have only see their awful AD try to force Assistant changes, which usually never ends up working.
