Malzahn: We won the state in recruiting, 8 out of 27 recruits were from Alabama

Auburn didn't top Alabama in last year's Iron Bowl. But off the field, Gus Malzahn believed the Tigers one-upped the Crimson Tide in recruiting the state's best players in 2015.
Auburn signed eight players from Alabama, including Jason Smith, who is returning to his home state after spending the past two years at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Miss. Alabama, on the other hand, snagged seven in-state prospects, though it comes with an asterisk; Hoover defensive end Christian Bell was asked to grayshirt — and he accepted that request. This means Bell won't enroll until January and will end up being counted as part of the Crimson Tide's 2016 class.
Regardless of what the numbers say, Malzahn thought his team brought in a better crop of prospects from the state.
"We signed eight players from the state of Alabama, including Mr. Football, which is the third year in a row," Malzahn said. "One of our main goals is to win the state of Alabama and we feel like we did that this year."

How the hell can you be proud of your in-state recruiting when you sign only eight players from the state? Who cares if you sign Mr. Football? Try signing more players from the state if you care about winning in-state recruiting so much. Being slightly less terrible at recruiting the state isn't something to brag about.

So they are including a kid that played JUCO in MS the past 2 years as an in-state player just to say they signed more than Alabama?

We talking about coach speak? Really?
Someone sticks a microphone in his face and asks about in state recruiting, I'm fricking stunned he didn't say "well we tried but may have gotten edged out by Alabama"

It's hard to win your state when you share it with Alabama. Les Miles is doing well at LSU since it's the only tFlagship. I think 17/25 were from Louisiana. I wouldnt consider 8/27 winning the state.

Alabama signed 4 of the top 6, including #1. If it's about numbers, Auburn won. If it's about quality, looks like Bama won.

How many did Bama sign from the state of Alabama this year?

Hence, my post "Being slightly less terrible at recruiting the state isn't something to brag about." If Saban made a comment about doing a great job recruiting the state, I would be the first person to rip on him.

IMO, Auburn and Alabama finished even with in-state recruiting. Auburn landed the gem with Mr. Football Kerryon Johnson, but it was about even in the end.

Seven, same as Auburn since no one has ever counted an out of state re-tred as an instate kid. Also, 4 out of the top six and number 1 overall is pretty powerful. Can't help it if the others were not quite up to snuff.

He better watch out. WRTS is trademarked.

What recruits that Auburn or Alabama wanted left the state this year? There weren't any Winstons being taken out of state this year. You do realize that Auburn has always recruited heavily in GA and FL, right? We didn't do that because we couldn't get more than 7 recruits from Alabama (this year at least).

And so was Derrick Henry. So big fricking deal. Henry, statistically, was the greatest high school running back of all time, breaking Barry Sanders' records. Would anyone here equate Derrick Henry with Barry Sanders? Or predict that Henry will one day even come close to being be regarded as a college back on an equivalent status as he was a high school back? But Henry damn sure looked like a man among boys at times, especially against some of the shitty teams he was playing. The fact that this Auburn recruit...or any recruit, for that matter, may have looked like a man among boys in high school, really doesn't mean shite.

I can safely say it looks like both teams will take more than seven each next year as it looks to be a very top heavy and strong class top to bottom for in state kids.
