Realistic Goals for our defense

Now that our defensive staff is nearly complete, what are your realistic goals of our defense and by what measurement?
Looking back at the last 5 year's defenses using Link to stats
Total Defense
2010 368.4 ypg - 24.1 ppg - 36.96% 3rd down conversion
2011 408 ypg - 28.9 ppg - 48.39% 3rd down
2012 420.5 ypg - 28.3 ppg - 40.83% 3rd down
2013 420.7 ypg - 24.7 ppg - 33% 3rd down
2014 64th with 398.8 ypg and 26.7 ppg (62nd) - 35.75% 3rd down
Looking at the stats compared to wins and losses, of course the biggest indicators were yards and points with the exception of 2013 which was just an anomaly of a season.
In losses, yards went up between 35 and 50% a game while points were nearly doubled per game in losses.
So what would be your realistic goals/expectations of our defense next year and even the year following? Would you like to see us close the gap between awful defensive performances (which seems to be tough to do with offenses the way they are now), just overall dropping all the stats down some more?
I would like to see us get back around 20-24 ppg next year and get to the 350 to 360 ypg. Both of these should easily be realistic given we were at 27 ppg last year with a lot of points given up in a few games.

I would like 300 ypg, 20 ppg, and a 20% 3rd down conversion success...that's on average, 1 in 5 3rd downs converted which would be huge!
Looking back, our defense had little trouble pushing teams to 3rd down, but it felt like nearly every one was converted. As a result, our def. began to look fatigued, and offenses capitalized.

Hopefully we will be able to stop teams on 4th down.

2011 Alabama held teams to a 24.5% conversation rate and you want 20%?

I want to hold inferior OOC opponents to 3 or less points. Weak SEC teams to less than 10. Good SEC teams to less than 30.
Top 3 in redzone defense
Top 5 in pass defense

20 PPG and >400 YPG would have me in a continuous fap cycle.
Holding opponents under 200 rush yds would also be awesome.

Hearing "After the play was over..." A LOT less would go a very long way.

THIS. I feel like the senseless penalties kept a lot more drives alive than poor execution in 3rd down. If they can just instill some KSU-esque discipline, the 3rd down conversion will naturally drop IMO

Fwiw, Florida gave up 21 ppg in 2014 with guys like donte fowler and VH3... 200 ppg is ambitious given our talent level.

that had a lot to do with how bad their offense was too. We have run a control offense the last two seasons and have had really good results with TOP, we should be able to field a very competent defense that gives up the 20 ppg range, we just haven't yet.

Hell, even Ellis held teams below that

Holding our rival to 43 points would be a start..

I would just like to see greater intensity and much better tackling. How many times did we have someone on the ball carrier in the Wisconsin game and still let them gain massive yards?
There was that one play that really killed me when we had two guys on someone on a third down behind the line of scrimmage and he still picked up four yards.
If we could get it near 20-24 points a game, that would be huge.

It's funny because it feels so true.

FTR, I saw your second post, as well.

You forget games like Missouri where Missouri's offense managed just 119 yards and 4 of their 5 TDs came off either special teams or defense.

I want to see us stop third and long consistently. I think everything will follow after that improvement.

Goals
1. Have an actual pass rush that will pressure the QB.
2. Tackle in space.
3. Cover somebody with a scheme that works.
4. Stop recruiting midget DB's.

EJ and his staff weren't recruiting "midget DBs" at all... in fact they were concentrating on guys with length, like Bessent and Westry.... if anything, we're gonna go back to recruiting the smaller guys (Irvin the Texas commit is an example).
T-rob and muschamp are going away from the emphasis on length and concreting more on speed/quickness.
