That is what has happened. These teams are being funded on the backs of students. We are talking hundreds of dollars a semester and for nothing.
Your argument would have merit except for the fact the UAB President is merely re-directing the money, not dropping the fees.

We wouldn't be human if we didn't feel for the people affected. But the irrational, uneducated finger-pointing at "big bad Alabama" is just nonsense.

Respectfully disagree. I have seen tons of Alabama posters here claim it has no effect on the economy or community. I personally think they cannot separate criticism of UA BoT with criticism of all things Alabama.
Rational people can see that no institution always makes the right choices or has the best interests of everyone in mind.

The hate for UAB football from Tuscaloosa is fricking hilarious.
I literally couldn't care less about UAB football. I don't care enough TO hate them. I feel horribly for those kids, the coaches, and their families. That said, the "love" for UAB football from the Plains is effing transparent (to borrow the descriptive from you). Donate. Buy tickets. Buy SEASON tickets. All of those have been options in the past. Not enough cared then and their faux concern now is a little too convenient.
I have a degree from UAB. I own a business. This is my second business. Merged the first. Had I operated the first at a deficit - at ANY deficit - I would not have been an attractive merger option. Had I operated at a massive deficit over a long period of time, I would have had to close the doors or put more of my own personal money into the company. Why is UAB - a STATE institution - any different?

Plenty of people cared, that's not why UAB does not have a football program. Hell the university would not accept donations for football while Watts was there.

Yes, football programs are the reason for the increase in tuition.
Football programs costs surely outweigh all the state funding cuts, right? It's not like in a recession higher ed budgets get squeezed/cut or anything, causing an increase in tuition.
So now the taxpayers of Alabama should fund the UAB football program? You're not really winning me over.

So surely UAB will see a significant decrease in tuition.
Lol, yeah, and we saw our taxes go down once the war in Iraq ended.

Yes? They turned down millions for that program to build a IPF. And you could not give specifically to football.

College is not a business. By your logic only 25 schools should have college football.
Again, there can be rational arguments for killing a program. The way this was done was not correct.
Put it to the boosters and community --- "if X amount of dollars cannot be raised, we will have no choice but to cancel X".
Do not commission a report to justify what you are already planning to do. Do not lie to the mayor of Birmingham saying no decision has been made. Do not lie to the new head coach when he signs on. Do not then hide from the community.
UAB leadership is crippled atm. The President could not even speak or shake hands at graduation. He is meeting with various departments this week scrambling to avoid a no confidence vote. The faculty are not overly concerned with football, they are upset, that unlike most major universities, choices are made unilaterally without input from stakeholders.
These issues are about much more than football. They are about the identity and future of UAB.

I agree. So what do you see happening to UAB's tuition in the immediate future now that this monkey is off their back? And my opinion is more than educated. They've been trying to kill UAB football for a decade now, and finally did it in thier best year in that decade. Sources within UAB have long known the Board of Trustees wanted to kill the program. But to act like this money will go to save the fricking manatees or that it'll result in a decrease in costs for students is uneducated and naive.

Even a State rep for Alabama thinks Paul Bryant Jr. is what started this.
quote:
"I think there are members of the board who want to see this program end before it generates so much momentum that it's more difficult, if not impossible, to get rid of," Williams said. "I think Paul Bryant Jr. is the most powerful member of the board so I think it starts there."

It's further naive to assume that the main source of revenue for the school- tuition- would not be used to offset losses from a program that lost $17m per year.
I would be surprised if tuition went down after this. Colleges, like bureaucrats, are loathe to reduce their budgets. Rather, there will not be as much of a need to increase tuition in the future or to beg more money from the state in increased support to pay for the program.

Where was all this outrage when the CFL team got the axe in bham? Or the XFL team, or the WFL team, or the USFL team, or the AFL team?
There just isn't enough interest from the population in bham to support somebody other than Bama and AU
