Impressive attendance indeed.

Were you among the 20 people who showed up to the protest?

And let's be real. Legion Field is not in a great part of town, and I am always afraid the thing will collapse.
People try to bring up the Classic, but that in no way is an apples to apples comparison. The Classic is like the Iron Bowl for HBCUs.
I read the city is still trying to keep the stadium viable, but with no football left, I have a hard time seeing how it can be maintained.

Dude, are you that ignorant of the history to try and claim this had anything to do with money?

Really?

Would you like to explain why the BOT refused to even discuss the new stadium when UAB had the financing locked down through bonds with the city and the feasibility study indicated everything was in line. It was a no brainer. The uat BOT knew it too which is why they refused to let it come up for discussion. Blocking the Fischer hire. Forcing the worst possible hire in the nation down their throats.

The history is long and well documented.

You have outed yourself as an irrational defender of all things Bama at all costs. Hell I even remember you claiming Rich Rod never turned down Bama, but Bama pulled the offer instead. It's pitiful you are trying to claim this was about money.

I have said this repeatedly UA fans and UAB fans are not mutually exclusive. Many in my family attended UAB and support UA as well.

Higgs, I have seen you post on this issue a good bit. I also have relatives who attended and two who coached basketball at UAB. All of them are Alabama fans, and none are UAB football fans. Are you one of the rarest of the rare, a UAB football fan above all other programs?

Sounds like you're trying to get Birmingham/the state of Alabama to make this exact mistake over again.

This was reply to the notion people in Birmingham do not care about football. Not saying the financial choice was wise, but clearly there was concern.

Bama fans sure are mad.

Not sure how any of this affects them one way or the other.

Weird.

No it doesn't. Are you familiar with "it takes money to make money?"

Programs can't win without good players. And you can't get good players without good facilities. And you can't get good facilities when you are turned down money for those facilities.

So because you had family who didn't support UAB football, it makes it rare for others to like UAB football?

Not above all other programs, but I am a supporter of UAB in all apsects. As a kid, my dad took me to Bartow Arena for Blazers games. I worked for the University, attended football games, donated and my wife was employed there until very recently. My point is you can be a fan of more than one program--- ESPECIALLY when one is not a threat to the other.

Everyone knows you get more fans when you start winning. As an Alabama fan, you should know that better than any. But you can't win without money.

And turned down for hiring good coaches. And turned down for accepting generous donations.

Not at all. But if you grew up here, it IS rare for anyone to like UAB football. I have never met anyone who claimed to be a UAB football fan. Never. Jacksonville State and Troy State, sure, many times, but not UAB.

UAB's fate was sealed well before this season. The reason there was an uptick in attendance is due to the knowledge from within the UA school system that this was the final year. UAB folks scrambled and tried to fill seats to give the appearance that the program was on the upswing. It was a last-gasp effort that was too little, too late.

UAB wanted an on-campus stadium at the price of $75 Million. From a 2011 article...

"UAB has never averaged more than 19,062 fans per game in Callaway's five seasons and finished 2011 at 16,579, its third-lowest attendance in 16 years as a Division I-A program and worst since 2002. The Blazers currently rank 110th out of 120 teams nationally in attendance and surpass only one Sun Belt Conference team."

I don't think spending $75 Million on a stadium would have helped attendance enough to justify the expense.

From another article...

"The Birmingham Park and Recreation Board provided me these numbers for UAB's 2011 games: Tulane, 17,290; Mississippi State, 29,037; UCF, 9,215; and Houston, 13,003. Melvin Miller, the director of the board, said that accounts for everybody in the stadium, including teams, workers, bands, cheerleaders and media."

That's why I laugh at the "they drew over 20K for games this year" claim. No, they didn't. There were never 20K fans in the seats for a single game this year.

But, you girls carry on...

I laugh when "business" people claim UAB should have been shutdown, and then don't point this out. It has to be at least set up to be successful at some point. UAB succeeded this year in spite of their own board and president, pretty amazing actually.

It's hysterical to me that some think all of this came down to economics. You have 36 other schools running on a deficit who are still recruiting. Some may close it down now that there has been a precedent set, but I really doubt it.

There were close to 30,000 for three games.
