What went wrong with South Carolina this year?

This is a legitimate question.
I honestly didn't follow them any and only saw them play against us. We played like shite yet somehow they collapsed at the end and let us steal it. With such lofty expectations and pre-season predictions to make the playoff, what went so wrong that led a team that highly regarded to 6-6?

Underestimated the loss of Shaw and Thompson disappointed, defense was really bad.

They showed signs of it last year. The reputation of the Old Ball Coach out weighed obvious concerns. The defense has issues. As an Auburn fan I know what this looks like.

Thompson had a school-record breaking season. It was the defense. If the defense was half as good as it was last year we arguably get to 10 wins (we don't choke away UK, Mizzou, and UT, beat AU)

They were just never that good to start with. Our crappy team beating them proved that

I agree with underestimating the loss of Shaw. Last year they were a TOTALLY different team with/without him. See: Mizzou game. I thought all along the hype was a little ambitious considering they were replacing Shaw with Thompson. I expected them to be worse than last year due to losing Shaw, but I wouldn't have guessed 6-6.

The real question to ask is how did this team get a top 10 preseason ranking. Far more mysterious if you ask me.

Spurrier getting complacent and lazy like he has been most of his career, except without the talent to overcome it. He was talking all offseason as if USC had already "arrived" before it even won the SEC.

I think guys really are missing the record-setting offense: Both in PPG and Thompson's yardage. Don't get me wrong. Shaw > Thompson but about 100 miles, but it was the defense. Make no mistake about it.

Lost a lot from last year..... Connor Shaw, Clowney, and a bunch of other defensive talent.

#1 WBB team is rolling right now, baseball team is still fresh from 2 CWS, and CFB lost both Shaw and Clowney and still made a bowl. Maybe expectations were too high in a rebuilding year?

I'm not a fan of their dc and when they lost Clowney and others from the D, they were in trouble. People like to say Clowney took plays off and had a poor last season (he certainly looks like a bust in the NFL), but that guy was drawing constant double teams and really allowed the rest of the D to excel.

For some reason everyone thought they'd be awesome despite losing the best QB in school history, the #1 overall pick and fielding a shite DL.

It was the defense. Look at the A&M game. SCAR's defense was so non-existent that it allowed a bad A&M team repeatedly to score so easily that it just blew their minds and shell-shocked the entire SCAR squad.

Spurrier may have been resting a little on his laurels from the past few seasons where USCe had double digit wins. USCe also finished in the top five last season, ahead of Bama (at #7). That led to an inflated position in the preseason poll for the Cocks. Spurrier taking jabs about not working as hard as coaches like Saban are comments that, in hindsight, he probably wishes he could have back.
Just a classic case of preseason polls being a crapshoot, sometimes. That, and USCe imploded late in several games.

Their defense went full Sal Sunseri. Tennessee offense scoring 2 TD with 3 minutes left in the game should tell you all you need to know.

why did Ward change schemes?
I know yall have probably answered that question ad nausem but I have never seen it explained and I'm too drunk to dig.

We lost a lot on the Dline last year, and not just Clowney. We had a couple more leave for the NFL early. That lead to the extreme lack of pressure you saw.
That was exacerbated by the fact that our secondary was overwhelmingly inexperienced. In over their heads in a lot of cases, combined with getting no help from a pass rush they got carved up.
Ward changed the scheme to try and put more LBs on the field since they were the most experienced.
You know the guy is having surgery again right?
