LSU Defense

I keep hearing the "Talking Head" discuss Bama and how they played against a great LSU Defense. What has changed for the LSU Defense since they played AU and MSU ? Both those teams ran up and down the field on them and shut it down in the 4th quarter. Yet Bama had 235 total yards at the 59 min mark. I know LSU will have a good Defense next year, but I thought they looked the same as they did a month ago.

key personel changes at LB and safety
In particular Beckwith at LB, he has the potential to be Bradie James 2.0
earlier in the year he was still having problems with the x's and o's so we had to rely on our senior Welter who is just not sec starting caliber.

Middle LB went from being the biggest hole on the team to being a strength. And losing Dwayne Thomas was a blessing in disguise because it got Jamal Adams on the field.

The D Line was pretty young and is finally coming along. Not much different than Auburn's improvement over the 2013 campaign.
Now the QB play is a different story altogether...

Maybe LSU just got better.
You know, like how Texas A&M's offense got 40 pts better over the course of 3 weeks.

You're blind if you think that is the "same" defense that played MSU and Auburn

Personnel changes and growing up. Simple as that. The D-line is playing gap sound and linebackers are not overrunning plays.
It's amazing the difference when players do their jobs versus running around haplessly trying to make a play. But that's a youth thing.

I can buy that reason, but what I saw from the AU and MSU games was not much different than the bama game. WR were still open in the secondary, but the main difference was that Bamas running backs look slower against LSUs Defense. Did LSU inject more speed into their D, or is it the different styles of AU,MSU and Bama ?

Our early season defense was a headscratcher. Personnel changes definitely helped, but for some reason earlier in the year, we liked to line up with no LBs or safeties in the middle of the field. It wasn't just against Auburn and MSU. We gave up huge runs up the middle to the likes of Sam Houston St, ULM, and New Mexico State. Hell, we would have lost to a mediocre Big 10 team if their head coach didn't go full retard in the 2nd half.

Easy, play AU Defense.

Yes, we sat the white linebacker.

we blitzed the shite out of bama, not so much with auburn and state. couple that with yes, theres much more speed on defense with the different personel. our D line was also getting a lot of penetration and hurrying bama's qb all night.

Kendell Beckwith is the answer. He should be getting more recognition than he is. He's made that much of a difference.
The DTs on our team have stepped up as well when it was thought they would be a huge weakness this year.

quote:Do you even begin to understand the difference between Beckwith and Welter? Welter shouldn't have a D1 scholarship, and Beckwith will probably be an all-american next year. no exaggeration for either.

AU fought those issues last year, but player doesn't change thing that much. We are talking about 250+ total yards of Offense difference.

Completely different defense on the field with Kendell Beckwith at MLB and to a smaller degree, Jamal Adams at safety.
DJ Welter was the worst LB I've ever seen at LSU. I cant believe he was the starter for a year and a half.

It's been that drastic of a change with Welter on the bench, seriously, he was the worst starting LB in the SEC. He did absolutely nothing, when he got blocked he was completely taken out of ever making a play, couldn't shed blocks.
When he was unblocked he just whiffed on a tackle when it was 1 on 1.
