Snow Skiing Trip

My kids want to go skiing. I've never been and frankly don't know where to go and what to do. We are not OT ballers. I'd like to go somewhere relatively close to me (Alabama) and try it as inexpensive as possible for the first time.
My wife is currently looking at Sugar Mountain in NC?
There is a place in Mentone, Al that I've heard about that's real close. And, of course, Gatlingburg, TN which is an awful shitty place.
Any advice appreciated.

hmmmm as far as I know you need to go west to make it decent. Depends on how old the kids are. Also consider snowboards (way better)

The Apps are boring as frick and not worth it. Go to Breckenridge, Aspen, Keystone or Copper Mountain. Really anywhere in Colorado.

I mean I guess if you have really small kids and you are more into just taking a trip and really not into skiing then this could be inexpensive fun.
But if you are athletic and want to really try skiing then this is what you would be missing out on...

Never been that far north. But if he's going that far he might as well go that far the other way to the majestic rockies.

Rockies are far better. But i would suggest against spending $5k on a trip to Colorado just so his kids can try out skiing.
Colorado is better in the summer for first time visitors.
Take a road trip up to WV spend three days/or go to other stops/cities along the way.
Snowboarding is harder to get started on. Unless your kids have experience wake boarding. I used to live out in colorado/vail valley

This would be my suggestion as well.
And make sure you check everything out ahead of time. Lots of hidden fees you may not account for like rentals and lift tickets.

You sound like you need cloudmont in alabama. Gatlinburg as an upgrade. If you don't have the money to go to Colorado, then don't hate.

New Mexico might be a good option. Not as pricey as CO but you'll still pay quite a bit.
It will cost u 80-100 a day per person depending on where u go.
Limit spending on the mountain. Take snacks in backpacks.
It also sounds like your bunch needs ski school. This may be your best trip you ever took but it could be the worst trip u ever took as well. Good luck

For the southeast, go to Snowshoe. Appalachians are a shitty place to learn because the powder quality is shite as compared to other places. East Tennessee blows in general, I agree that you should avoid it.

I would go to West Virginia if you're not an OT baller.

just about to say this, especially if you want to make it a weekend family getaway

You will bored at Sugar very quickly. It's not a place you go for multiple days in a row to be honest. If you've never been before and want everyone to "experience" skiing just check out Snowshoe. Do yourself a favor and take a lesson. The Silver Creek area is more conducive to learning than the main area. I would stay at the main area though because there's more to do there.

Try the slopes in Mississippi. Its one of the nations best snow skiing experiences.

We will take a look at Snowshoe. My wife and I are in our 40's. Skiing for us will likely result in a blown knee or torn Achilles.
