They chose him due to his astronomical ratings in Alabama.
I think that's the other issue for both fanbases in the SEC and outside of the SEC. My perception of him is that he's the mouthpiece of Alabama football and lacks the ability to be as interested in other programs as he is in #1 Alabama and #2 Auburn.
He's essentially a local personality with local interests being put into the position of being nationally distributed. If the SEC is to expand their brand as the #1 product in college football that's not what you should want in a highly distributed "SEC" media program.

He's now on 790AM in Atlanta 3-7PM. Its fricking awful. Finebaum himself isnt so bad but the freaking morons who he lets just take over the show are terrible. Seriously its like the radio version of Jerry Springer.

I predict at some point, Clay Travis will be setting by him in the studio, making quips per minute at the homer statements from Fanbam/fans.
Perfect storm!

This.
However, his representation is Bama#1 and then after 20 miles distance #2 Auburn, then a few miles after that everybody else. Finebaum literally is like radio version of Jerry Springer. He knows he will get the best performance radio out of the Mullet Nation. However, if he ever pandered a little to the ACC and stirred up the Noles and Clemson folks, he'd get some gomers out of that crowd too.

Right. And all New Yorkers / New Jersey'ers / Philadelphian's are what's spewed out on Mike and The Mad Dog.

I hate to sound like an old "get off my lawn" type but his show was better in my opinion when it was a local show. Believe it or not, he actually had some reasonably intelligent Alabama and Auburn regulars who outnumbered the Jerry Springer types. As he has gotten bigger he has attracted truckloads of Jerry Springer type callers and they now dominate the show. There were wacky callers back then but not nearly as many as there are now. I also liked his show WAY better when he had Neal Vickers as a sidekick.

His show is funny as shite and is a perfect representation of all SEC fans. The only halfway educated people that call in represent the Big10.

and if he is the star of the SEC Network, I wish it would go away. What a bunch of baloney!! If he is the poster boy for the SEC, then all SEC teams should wear overalls & go barefoot. He glamorizes the idiot fans (Updyke, etc) and all the world will think we are all like that
How is it that you are an Auburn fan and you are just now realizing this about Finebaum?

I knew this about Finebaum -- but I live out of state. Until recently couldn't hear him & was happy with that. All the SEC network rollout -- thought I would give him another listen on Serius XM, Shamed me and my Alabama roots. I just hate to see this show represent the SEC. Too many good folks

All of this.....was a much, much better show when it was just a local B'ham sports talk show. I don't remember any Jerry Springer antics at all....and it was good discussion between AU and UA fans...at least it was civil.....but has just got a lot worse over the years especially since 2010 and Finebaum has really fanned the flames.

Sorry, Alabama based talk radio/tv does not translate well on the national stage.

The Finebaum show doesn't make the SEC look bad. Finebaum performs a valuable service by showing the world that Alabama fans are mostly compete morons like that hag, Phyllis.

If you love Alabama, then you will love Finebaum. For those other SEC schools, who beat Bama about once every 5-10 years (if you are lucky) just wait for your miracle game to finally happen. He and his callers will drag your fanbase through the mud for the next three years. Of course, 80% of you will never beat Bama again in your lifetime so what difference does it make anyway. So Enjoy!

keeper of the spoon....
And the reason he was hired on at ESPN was the very same reason people post out here about him.
He draws attention... good or bad.
He is a Saban homer first. Then a Bama homer when they are winning. He will ride the jocks of whichever team in the SEC is winning at the time.
Food for thought: he dissed Saban and Bama fans when Saban was named coach. His commentaries were down right brutal at times. But then he hitched his wagon and rode the shirttails of Saban to the promised land he now sits in.

you'll never be important enough to distinguish yourself as a super Alabama fan unless you have ten sisters to impregnate and line them all up at once to have their babies signed by master luigi

He is the one thing thing that is preventing me from getting overly-excited about the SEC Network. He knows little about actual football....just general topics from a macro-level.
I know it's popular to say he's a Bama homer, but he does it only because he knows what drives his ratings. He'll ride that wave until it crests. When Shula was here, he loved to trash UA.
The sooner that clown is gone from college football, the better the sport will be.

I hope ESPN has a way of measuring where the viewers are who watch him on the SEC network. I doubt there will be much viewership outside of Alabama. He's a hack with zero credibility.

How so? Notoriety might be good, but I think maybe the context of that notoriety matters a bit. How is the league being made synonymous with shouting obese rednecks good for the brand?
