Georgia and Notre Dame are moving closer to a football series “later this decade,” Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity said Tuesday. And while no deal is done, and McGarity cautioned that there could be snags, he made clear that he would be eager for it to happen.
“I think it’s an opponent we’ve played, what, one time? 1980? For our fans to be able to go up to South Bend, and for our fans to see Notre Dame play between the hedges, I think from a national perspective it’d be off the charts, as far as interest, as far as intrigue,” McGarity said. “That would be something out of the ordinary that our fans would be very, very excited about.”
The two schools haven’t nailed down which years it would be, but McGarity said it would be in the range of 2017-20. Notre Dame would visit Sanford Stadium, and Georgia would visit Notre Dame Stadium.

Do these games really ever materialize? Every time I get excited about a far future game it gets canned.... I mean every single time.

2017 looks good.
Cross division opponent is Miss State.

Well OSU Colorado and Asu all materialized.

Yeah, but Oregon and Ohio State fell through.

This will happen because it sounds like both schools really want it to happen.
There really wasn't any advantage to UGA playing Oregon, and Ohio State didn't actually want to play a game in the South in September, when they actually thought about it.
ND wants exposure in Georgia, UGA wants the national exposure of playing ND. Win-win

I would 100% travel for that game. I imagine we'd travel EXTREMELY well for that one. Dawg fans that don't usually travel would save up for a chance to see the dawgs play in South Bend.

because Notre Dame is Notre Dame, and Oregon is not.
Oregon, while certainly a flashy program with momentum, does not have and never will have the national appeal of Notre Dame.

You're right, but I don't think it would have brought enough benefit for us to go across the country to play a really good team in an area where there really isn't a recruiting advantage to be gained.

I'm glad they cancelled it. I think it was supposed to happen during our 6-7 and 8-5 years. But someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The Oregon series? That was 2015/2016

Yea, think it was only cancelled during the bad years and I wanna say it was when McGarity was going around and nixing all of our trips out to the west and trying to keep it regional or on the East coast
Also, guesses on the other two teams McGarity referred to? My guess is FSU and maybe VT.

I think FSU in Atlanta is likely.
I doubt it would be VT. No particular reason for saying that, I just don't think it's that attractive of a game. I would love for UGA to play UVA or UNC though. Much better trips

These statements don't make any sense.

You would have to know my opinion of VT for that to make sense, I suppose.
Basically, VT fans are the absolute bottom of the barrel. Absolute trash. It's a mix of hill people and fairweather fans left over from the early 2000s. They are the worst. That combined with Blacksburg being so average means I don't ever care to see UGA play VT in Blacksburg. I guess mudholing those idiots does have appeal though, so idk.
I want to play UVA and UNC because Charlottesville and Chapel Hill are awesome, their fans are indifferent but generally cool, and it would be a bunch of fun.

I lived in Virginia for several years and had the opposite impression of VT fans. Yes, Southwest Virginia is one of the most backwoods places in the country, but they have a large alumni base and following in Hampton Roads. I used to spend every Saturday at Buffalo Wild Wings in Virginia Beach and the fans I interacted with were, for the most part, pretty good fans who would support their team through rough times (like after they lost to Boise St and James Madison in consecutive weeks in 2010).
UGA/VT would be a much more attractive game than UGA/UVA, because UVA has been an underachieving program for many, many years. UVA has a great city, awesome campus, and very fertile recruiting bases in Va Beach and DC, neither of which are far from campus. Yet they are an awful team almost every year.

Maybe I've just spent too much time around them then. I know way too many VT fans who were UVA fans but switched to VT when Vick showed up. I also know way too many VT fans who are UNC basketball fans because VT sucks at basketball.
VT also sucks now, so there's that. Beamer's about to retire anyway. UVA sucks too but at least they're pleasantly indifferent about it. Nothing says we have to always schedule good teams.
ETA- I also think UGA would want to cultivate some sort of relationship with UVA, even if it's only minor.
