Would you have drafted Michael Sam?

If it's my organization, I wouldn't.
Two reasons...
1. I think his stats were inflated due to big numbers against poor OL's and his performance at the combine shows he possesses below-average lower body power and speed. Basically I don't think he's all that good.
2. He's gay. I don't mean this in the "I'm against gay individuals and gay lifestyle/marriage/etc..." I'm pro gay marriage and don't care what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home.
I mean this in the sense that, if it's my organization, I don't want the potential baggage that comes with this. I don't want to be picketed by gay rights groups like its the grand opening of a new chick-fil-a every time someone thinks he's being mistreated. If he doesn't start a game...it's because he's gay. If he doesn't get enough play time...it's because he's gay. I decide he's not that good and we cut/trade him...it was because he's gay. We don't renegotiate his contract to pay him more...it was because he's gay.
I wouldn't want to risk having my organization exposed to being called bigoted at the drop of a hat.
That being said, I hope he has a great career. He's going to need to work pretty hard though because he lacks what I would consider to be professional level strength/power/speed to be effective in the league, and he can't afford to give people anymore excuses to cut him.

No
Because he isn't an NFL caliber player
But I would sign him as a FA

This x 1000. You take out Vandy, Arky St and UF, none with dominant OTs, and Michael Sam had like 1.5 sacks and 2.5 TFL. Not SEC POY #s and not draftable numbers. Add in his combine #s and he doesn't deserve to get drafted over guys like Jeffcoat from UTx

Nobody gives a shite about this 2 years from now. He will just be the gay guy

You're scared of 2 salt shakers on the same table? You're definitely a homophobe!
ETA: wouldn't have drafted him bc of his lack of talent (9 of his 11.5 sacks came in 2 non-SEC games), and the circus that's surrounding him.

In the 7th round? Yes.
Its not a valuable pick anyway and you secure his rights vs udfa market.
Fisher is a strong leader in the locker room and well respected in the league

No
I would not draft a openly gay player.

No, because he is to situational in his abilities on the Rams already stout defensive line.
Who am I going to tell "take a seat" on a passing down so Mike Sam can play? Long or Quinn? Terrible pick for the Rams.

So he'll be able to deal with the media and backlash from cutting him, better than some of the other coaches out there?

Fisher won't let the locker room become a shite show like the dolphins did

There's little chance you'll ever have an organization, so you can sleep well knowing you won't have to make the tough decisions.

OLB
Im sorry, Im a huge Mizzou homer but Sam is NEVER going to play OLB in the NFL. He doesnt have the physical ability.

The NFL was not going to let him go undrafted, as it would have been bad PR for them.
He'll get cut most likely anyway.
If I were a team I wouldn't care about him being gay, but I would care about the media shitstorm that it brings.
ESPN and that national mainstream media have pretty much made it known they are champions of liberal social causes and hype these things up as much as possible, and I wouldn't want to have to deal with all that crap.

I think you give them too much credit, it will always be a lingering liability. Sam will carry with him a media circus like that of Tebow and he will until he leaves the league or someone that is a better player comes in to carry the torch.

No. Did you see that reaction to getting drafted? Looked more like a dad watching his daughter walk down the aisle then an NFL Dlineman.
Plus, his combine sucked and his stats were inflated
