CBJ was rated as a top 10 in-game coach by ESPN last season... I am sure that has nothing to do with his coaching aptitude though.

in all seriousness, do you have a link to this article?... i'm curious who they consider the top 10 in game guys

well, he did lose to derek dooley...
He lost to an NFL offense, Dooley had little to nothing to do with that.
My evidence? The rest of his coaching career

Neither Butch Jones nor Brian Kelly recruited players good enough to stop Justin Hunter and Da'Rick Rodgers. That's not a knock against either coach - more of a testament to the Cincinnati program.
And to say that Butch lost to Dooley is laughable. He lost to superior talent. Tyler Bray, not know for his intelligence or football acumen, was ignoring the coaching staff and calling his own plays. It was that much of a mismatch.

UT has ZERO talent foundation. So yeah, he needs to recruit all the time
Yall just signed an entire 85 man roster last cycle. How much more do you need for a "foundation"

Have you mentioned yet that Butch is gone after year 3 if Ferguson doesn't pan out?
Posted on 3/13/14 at 11:08 am to NorthGAVol
if you want me to i will... if riley ferguson is a bust, then butch jones will be out of a job after 2015. I don't think that's a stretch of a statement at all... There are four QBs on the roster right now, and no incoming frosh QB. Dobbs is probably not SEC caliber, Whorley is a mediocre QB (who will be gone anyway after this year), Peterman -- enough said... that leaves Fergeson.
eta: that could change if UT brings in a top flight JUCO guy in this next class... but i don't believe they are targetting any at this time.

No some of you need to learn to read. I responded to a UT poster that stated Jones won with his players. I said he did not and the facts show the 2 successful years he had as the HC at Cincy he won with Kelly's players.
No where did I say once Jones was not a good coach.

Is this actually documented or is this one of those message board rumors that people start to believe is true as more time goes by.

You keep hitting your head on brick walls and you will be even more nonsensical... just messing with you TW.

1. When you say he didn't win with players he recruited are you including the 2010 class he signed?
2. What exactly is the point that you're trying to make? That Butch only won in Cincinnati because of the talent left to him?

well, he did lose to derek dooley... was that b/c of his coaching or BK's players?... depends on what side of the argument you're on, I guess.
He also beat a very good Franklin lead Vandy team in their bowl game that lost to Derek Fooley in the same year. See how playing that game doesn't work?

You're judging from seeing a true freshman(fall enrollee)being thrown in against bama at bama. Then he gets hurt in the second quarter against Mizzou the next week and plays the rest of the season hurt.
You have serious skills if you think you saw whether he will be good or not. Goodness

i didn't say definitively, but it's pretty clear with the few games he played what type of skillset he pocesses. He is at the very least another 1-1/2 or 2 years away from being there... He would've really benefited from a redshirt, and maybe he gets one this year.

In 2011 Butch only had a handful of players that he actually recruited that made the 3 deep. That team was successful because of players from the 2007-2009 classes. The 2012 season saw some of the 2010 class contribute but only one WR who finished 3rd on the roster for yds. But to be fair he what arrived with 6 weeks to recruit over half the team he brought in. The only 2 he signed that were above 3 star neither qualified.
So to answer the 1st question yes he was successful in 2011 and 2012 mainly due to players B Kelly had brought in.
In regards to my point is we do not know what he can do yet. What we do know when he has been left talent on par with his competition he has been successful on the field. So it seems he can coach in the game and so maybe if he can bring in the talent over the next few years he will get UT back to the top.
The issue for UT this season is the schedule is not easy and Butch does not have that luxury of elite legacy talent coming in and recruiting hard with no concern how the season plays out. If UT has a rough season like last we will actually find out how good of a recruiter he is. Again he appears to be able to coach with talent on par with the opponent but he does not have that talent on level with the top tier in the SEC yet. If UT finishes 6-6 or 5-7 lets see if he can hold on to everyone and sell another year we are rebuilding brick by brick.
Again he may the one and the mess inherited all the way back the later years of Fulmer are still haunting the program.

Ha, no it is not. What you saw was youth and injury. There is no way of telling, good or bad. I saw flashes of some very good things. I also saw bad things, but again, those were influenced by youth and injury.
Not to mention 3 of his games were against Auburn(went to the National Title game), Mizzou(SEC East champs) and Bama. Vandy had a good team as well.

I don't watch the Bearcats so I went to:
LINK
And a lot of players from the 2010 class and later contributed.
The qb with the most yards and tds, the backup rb and kick returner, the top 4 wrs, the kicker, and a host of defense players (including the top tackler on the team). Haven't looked up the O-line so no idea on that.
Where are you getting this idea that only "some" of Butch Jones' recruits mattered in the 2012 season?

I forgot Munchie was his recruit so I will give him that but the top WR according to that link is Kelce who was a part of the 2008 class and the 2nd best WR was Thompkins that basically no one else would take. After a half a dozen more drug arrest drug arrest(IIRC)in HS he attended 2 different JUCOs before signing with UT but never enrolled because CLK left and transferred to OU but they had concerns on his legal issues and so nope and so the only HC that would take him at that point was Jones who was rushing to put together a class. And regarding the backup RB no offense but #1 RB had as many yards as the next 9 top rushers on the team combined.
But yes it appears he had a good portion of players he recruited from 2010 on the field in 12.

Kelce is a TE. All the top WRs were Jones' recruits.
But at the end of the day the only thing I care about are all the recruits he's bringing to UT. It's time for us to take down Bama.
