ell, this goes along with a general hypothesis I've had for a while now; Saban's biggest value isn't his on-field coaching prowess, it's his ability to completely demolish everyone on the recruiting trail that makes the Alabama Death Star truly tick.
Wow he really went out on a limb with that one.

Good list. I don't see how you can't rank Sumlin over Les. Since Sumlin has been at A&M, he has the same amount of wins as Les, more top 5 finishes, more bowl wins, more wins against Alabama, and more wins against Ole Miss. Sumlin did this with a bunch of Big 12 recruits. Les had an armory of 4 and 5 stars coming off a National Championship Game appearance. It's obvious tDecline is real, and Les is a big part of it.

Main fault I see is their is zero accounting for longevity or lack there of. So Malzahn's and Jones are rewarded for single data point and Spurrier is not getting respect for turnaround from long ago

Absolutely 0-1 in National title games and never being there certainly do look better than one coach who has won 3 in 5 years and another coach who has appeared in two and won one. I just don't understand any other criteria that would matter. Guys may be the best ever when he is done but it is a bit early.

so it is a good list only because sumlin is higher than les? what about the rest of the list?

Because he divided recruiting and gameday coaching
Saban is a great recruiter but not the best gameday coach
That being said, this guy's system has some serious flaws

Let me say this; I don't think Saban is only the 3rd best coach in the conference. I still think the guy is the best coach in the league (and in the country for that matter), but maybe college football fans should re-examine whether Saban is some sort of coaching god.
So, he doesn't agree with the results of his own model but he wrote a blog about it anyway. Awesome.

It's generally not a great idea to try and use baseball stats on football.

Your kindness is greatly appreciated. But do not hesitate to bring any future personal errors to my attention. I must be as bad in spelling as our football coach is in his capacity.

lol what a dumb system. two equally weighted components...and one of them is the difference between Pythagorean percentage and actual winning percentage. most computer systems much more accurately refer to that as 'luck'

I definitely wouldn't rank Gus over Saban at this point, but I think a fair argument could be made that Gus is ahead of where Saban was at this stage in his HC career.

If it was a 162 game football season it would make more sense.
