Student fan attendance is a nationwide problem

So it turns out it isn't just grumpy old man talk pointing out that student fan interest and attendance seems to be falling.
Students don't show up, or they show up and leave early, or they show up and barely cheer or pay attention, etc.
You've probably noticed it at your school already.
Well it's not just your school. It's everybody. Big schools, small schools. Power programs, mid-majors, winning programs, losing programs, doesn't seem to matter.

All the possible reasons they mention are things discussed before. Kids are addicted to cell phones and can't get coverage, they have grown up in the era of the high def flat screen tv and find that a better experience, etc.

But we should expand the stadiums ASAP

Easy solution... Offer less to the students.

That made me smile. How many SEC students say "I skipped our game to watch GT-Wake"?

"One thing Clemson, Vanderbilt and Auburn all had in common was a crazy stadium atmosphere," Wolk said. "At Georgia? Traditional music and a PA announcer barely yelling 'Let's make some noise 'on third down."
Vandy is known for having a crazy atmosphere? Clemson was awesome....AU almost always is. Just weird seeing Vandy and crazy atmosphere. But I agree that Sanford Stadium sucks inside. UGA fans can tailgate with the best of them, but stadium experience is underwhelming.

No it's not. When I went to UT from 98-04 I went to maybe 2-3 home games per year. Ticket was FREE and I didn't even have to deal with parking. I could just walk to the stadium in 5 minutes.
I still loved college football but at age 18-24 I was more focused on getting laid and getting drunk. Now that I'm in my 30's, I watch every frickin snap.

A&M isn't having this problem.

Wow, UK is actually out front in something regarding SEC football. We're downsizing our stadium. Whodathunkit?

Uh no, Our student section is crazy dedicated.
Maybe everyone else should get their students to come practice at midnight the day before a game....

A lot of has to do with the tailgating.
The partying outside has become bigger than the game itself.

I would venture to say that it is not just student attendance that is down

we aren't having any problems

Not at USC, we were in the Top 10 nationally for Attendance %. We dedicate the entire North Endzone, 3 sections in the Lower East Stands 1 in the Upper West stands to students/faculty and it's always full or almost full, even for games against mid tier teams.

I'd guess some of it has to do with kids wanting to do other stuff, get laid, get drunk ect. They're not interested in every snap.
But I'd also guess some of it has to do with the way athletes run the show at universities. The perception is a lot of them don't do the school work, they get whatever they want, they get the women, they get everything. They're dicks to normal students or treat them as if they're irrelevant but then want them to show up to games.

Does anyone know if A&M's student attendance has been declining?

South Carolina most definitely needs a smaller student section.
Also, I graduated last year.

Screw the students and their "distractions." Gameday is an experience, not a 4 hour wait to find out who won. I'm a fricking Vandy fan -- which means a good game for me was usually one where the cheerleaders didn't weep at the tragedy of it all -- and, while I can't claim to have made every game, I certainly made at least 5-6 a year. Hell, I made at least 3-4 a year when I was in grad school at UNC, and UNC was hardly much better than Vandy. I get the arguments for staying home and watching it on a big-screen TV. That's what I do every Saturday nowadays, and it's quite nice. But if you're a student who can't be bothered to go cheer for your favorite team in person (assuming there are no other factors like physical or economic limitations), you need to go cheer for soccer or something instead because you're missing out on one of the great experiences of sports...filling up on booze and brisket in the parking lot, then cheering your lungs out in the stadium while tens of thousands of obnoxious assholes do the same all around you.
Er...other obnoxious assholes, I meant to say.

Not for us.
Still packing in 30,000 a week.
But quick, someone link the article saying A&M has the SEC's fourth best student section.
