This whole Michael Sam gay-out could be a well crafted marketing ploy.

Kudos to the agent and "handlers" of Mr. Sam for orchestrating one of the best marketing plans ever for a college player entering the draft.
You see, he's not really a prototypical DE in the NFL. He's smaller than the mold and really relied on one move to amass most of his sacks against the UF 5th string OT and an injury riddled UG offense.
He's projected by some to go in the 6th round. Without the outing, there'd be very little mention of him other than him getting owned at the Senior Bowl practices.

It's plausible that the agent, after learning of Mr. Sam's love of bright colors and penis (men), decided to take advantage of being the first openly homosexual to declare for the NFL draft.
In my opinion, that was a brilliant move. Regardless of how he does in the draft or how long he lasts in the NFL, he'll be set for life with his book detailing his struggle to be a lover of men (gay) in a man's sport. His jersey sales may set records as it's likely that even the most lisping, limp wristed (openly homosexual), Atlantan will buy his jersey in pink no matter which team pays him to parade around the field. The right to lay with another man crowd will pay him thousands of dollars to hear how hard it was to be gay in those drab uniforms with so little bright colors. He will be busier than the Duck Dynasty crew on the speaking engagement scene.
So, even if he never amounts to anything in the NFL, by drawing all this attention to himself (if it was indeed on purpose) for liking to fornicate with men (being gay), he'll still be able to support himself and will never need a sugar daddy (help from another gay man). It's brilliant if you think about it.
Edited for those offended.

I'll co-sign this.

I dont think it really helps his playing career one bit, however it does open multiple avenues for him, should he not stay on a roster, probably reporting

god we're cynical people.
Maybe dude just wanted to not hide that he's gay.

Well considering that this could make him drop in the draft, I'm going to respectfully disagree with you.

This thread is gay

Maybe but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be "marketed" as homosexual.

I definitely needed to read another anti-homo thread full of steotypic slurs.

You suck

I'm of the belief that this helps his draft stock.
I think he was on the borderline to not get drafted, this changes everything. He must get drafted now, no matter what.

The timing was deliberate. And while I'm not a supporter of his orientation, I can't fault him for that.
I'm a marketing guy--I think it was an excellent (if risky) move.

Really?

... or he had been asked by scouts and he was going to get "outted" on there terms and wanted to do it on his. I'd have done the same thing. If it benefits him, great for him.
It's 2014. The country really needs to put this whole "gay"/"lesbian" thing behind us, accept it, and move the frick one. This whole conversation has gone on for too long. If you don't like it, GREAT, don't be gay/lesbian.

so, let's make sure we've got this straight:
there are no current male american athletes on active team rosters who are openly gay. the reason is that gay guys receive a lot of hate speech and undue criticism. michael sam comes out as gay, knowing that he's going to receive a lot of hate speech and criticism. but you're saying that he chose to make himself the target of people like you in order to market himself better, even though he was going to get an nfl contract no matter what? is that really what you're saying?

The same cynical argument was made about Jason Collins' coming out, but guess what?--he did not get signed by any NBA team as a free agent.....and I am sure that Michael Sam was aware of that, so your whole premise is ridiculous and reveals nothing except that you are threatened by the fact that a gay guy is six times the man that you ever will be......

without some of the derogatory commentary, I pretty much agree with the roadgator. This is classic Madonna/lady Gaga marketing.
