We don't have a national language.
Fun fact: before WWI, it wasn't at all uncommon to hear German spoken in the US. German immigrants had come to the US in droves from the end of the Civil War to the early 1900's, and there were German communities from sea to shining sea. My grandfather's family were all Texas Germans, and he even attended a German speaking elementary school until anti-German hysteria brought about by WWI closed the school down.

The commercial didn't bother me because it was just a damned cola commercial, but the crux of the outrage is in this statement - and it is an accurate one.
We are much not a melting pot these days. We're very far into turning into a plate with dividers where none of the foods ever mix - and that is a very bad thing.

I must have missed that in my last reading of the Constitution.

Good Lord, have you ever read any American history??? The exact same thing was said in the 1800's about the Irish, Chinese, Eastern Europeans, Jews, Catholics....the list goes on and on.

I must have missed the part where the Constitution had anything to do with the concept of a melting pot at all.

The food in a melting pot touches, but it doesn't turn into something else. Peas don't turn into carrots.

So maybe the characters in the commercial had just immigrated here, legally of course. Are they expected to speak perfect English the minute they step on US soil? What kind of timeframe are they allowed to assimilate into US culture?

People are stupid and offended because the song wasn't in English.
Now you're filled in.
Now you're filled in.

What kills me is at the end of the day they are still singing about AMERICA. For the love of Pete.....

This has been a great litmus test issue though. Anyone offended can't be taken seriously politically anymore.
