Im not totally opposed to using Cyrus like Javy. He'd play outside in base and play star in Nickel. Not a bad idea. I think Star is the more complex position to learn. So, it would make sense to give that position to a senior returning starter.
but if I have to have any more 5 page battles with some of yall about whether Cyrus should be starting, I might just shoot myself in the face.
I can already tell that this year it will be Jabriel Washington that most fans will groan about. And while I don't feel as confident about Jabriel as I did about Cyrus last year, I still think Jabriel will have a big role on defense, even if it's as the deep safety in sub-packages. Maybe one of the freshman can supplant him there. I feel like the new guys are probably better athletes. But, I think Washington's speed and experience will be enough for him to keep his job. IIRC, he was a track athlete in HS. Not a big hitter, but fast and rangy. Somewhere between Robbie Green and Will Lowery.

Let the jabriel war begin because that fricker sucks haha. Deionte Thompson should get it or take over at FS while geno smith takes it

We will not start a true freshman (even an EE) at FS unless he absolutely blows everyone away at practice. Saban and Smart clearly place a high value on experience and knowledge compared to raw talent, for better or worse.

Fair enough. Move EJ to FS in that package with geno deep. Anyone but jabriel. Put Daniel Geddes back there before washington

And people forget that players like Washington are pretty darn talented in their own right. He wasn't ranked that high but had an offer list as impressive as anyone's

Not sure how you can say Hump is more capable of not getting burned when he hasn't played a down of college football. I'm sure Marlon will be a fine player one day but if he were ready and that much of a no brainer they would have played him.

What position do you coach on the team or have you ever coached before?

You have a lot of bammer in you.

People don't remember EJ had ACL surgery last spring. He's pretty good! Give him a little bit of time!

well shite, we might get this bad boy to 1000 pages after all.
i'll just start by saying that Washington knows the defense better than any of the new kids.

Watched Marlon enough in the toughest classification in Alabama HS football to know what hes capable of.

I dont coach currently. But I played safety for UAB. Just stop

Washington is better the farther he is from the LOS. He works best as a deep safety for help over the top than a safety coming up and making the tackle.
Let's him use his speed, and less likely he has to tackle a RB or slot. He's pretty slender.

Prior to the knee injury EJ was a high 4.4 ~ low 4.5 guy will good short area burst. After the knee EJ was a 4.6 guy with no short area burst. Late in the season he got back closer to the low 4.5 guy but his speed is still straight line speed.
This off season will be the chance to regain his short area burst or not. If he can not get it back then safety is the best option for him. Even if he can, he is now sharing a spot with a couple of sub 4.4 guys with short area burst that need reps to quit thinking and just react.

Thought he'd end up at Kentucky. Best of luck to him.

totally agree. Will Lowery wasn't a run stuffer either, but he was a nice piece of the puzzle on D that year.
i'd like to see our CBs do a much better job at tackling also. EJ got stiff armed way too many times and just didn't have much pop when tackling. Tony Brown was even worse. He got stiff armed or ran over almost every time he tried to tackle a RB. Cyrus didn't particularly shine in that area either.
I miss the guys like Kareem, Javy, Dre, and Dee. Those guys would light you up. Not sure which of that group was the best tackler. But they were all better than anything we had last year. The play in the Arkansas game where Dre K destroyed a WR and the play in the Michigan game where Dee destroyed Shoelace after an INT are two of my favorites from the saban era.

well, his major problem was getting beat deep. that's straight line speed. but he showed great burst in going from running downfield to falling on the ground.

Mel Tucker is supposedly a pretty good teacher in technique, especially tackling. Donte Whitner credits him with teaching how to tackle correctly.
Of course Hitner has a little more than technique behind his tackles. I bet Pierre Thomas still feels that hit he put on him...

that's great. Can we move Rueben to DB? he'd be dirty at star. blind side nickel blitz FTMFW!
eta: we'd have to keep an ambulance on standby and opposing QBs would need to where a HANS device from NASCAR
