My buddy says he's using rubberized plates that aren't 45s. Let's hear from the bros who lift.

I saw this video yesterday. I was extremely impressed.

You can tell it's a lot of weight when you can see the barbell bending in places from the plates, which you can see here. (or the barbell is crappy but it looks to be holding up ok)

The only thing I can't tell is if the spot is giving him a few pounds of help, so it may only be like 500 instead of 515

Also, wasn't it weird that the kid didn't make one sound? When I'm maxing or on my last set I'm grunting on the way up in a gross manner

if its a 45# plate the rubber has nothing to do with it. Other then adding to the size of the plate

The spotters kind of sucked considering the weight and all

Agreed if his muscles had twitched or spasmed, or he cramped (which happens sometimes on heavy lifts) not one of those 3 was gonna stop that from hitting his chest HARD

Your buddy doesn't realize that there are more than just cast iron 45 plates out there?

We have 5 lb rubber plates in our facility that are the same size as traditional 45 lb plates that everyone recognizes. They are used for boys/girls that are just getting started with a weightlifting program on exercises like power cleans. If the larger plates aren't used, the bar sits to low to the ground and the correct technique can't be used. Many times when we have visitors and they see a small girl cleaning what they think is 135 lbs, its actually only 55 lbs

FWIW, I think that Smith's bench press is legit. He is a monster. Waaaaay past his age physically.

depends on if those are metal coated with rubber, or like the plates my crossfit buddies have that are solid rubber. the 45s for those kind are about 2x the width of cast iron plates. 25lb rubber plates look like 45s.

1. Those are definitely 100% 45lb plates. Zero doubt about it.

2. That spotter is helping a lot more than it appears. On the second and third rep, he is helping at least 25lbs. You can use two fingers and help a lot more than it would appear. It is not so much how much weight the spotter is actually taking on during the lift, but the keeping of the momentum and the bar moving upward that matters. The sticking point on bench is about halfway way up when the load starts to be transferred from the pecs to the triceps and front delts. The spotter just bumping the bar at that point can make a huge difference and that spotter helped throughout the lift.

Bottom line, yes it is 515. However, the most he could have done without the spot on that lift was 1 rep. He would have not gotten the second or third without it. Possibly the second with a supreme effort and a major bridge with his legs but I doubt it. The third he would not have gotten more than 3-4 inches off his chest.

'Rubberized' isn't a thing. They're called bumper plates, because dropping them on the floor won't cause demolition of said floor.

It's a legit lift. Other extraordinary individuals have done more at that age.

Weight looks legit. Spotter may have aided too much to call all three reps legit.
