I think it was tied with edge to UGA prior to 2004. In the last decade I think Auburn has taken that spot away. Arguably, in the same time period, LSU has jumped both.
Obviously that puts some emphasis on modern play, but 10 years is an appropriate time period to justify that type of shift, IMO.

This suprised me for numerous reasons
1) N. Dame isn't #1. Always starts the season in the polls
2) UF and FSU being in the top 10, fairly recent success and the poll rating is from 1936
3) FSU being ahead of UF, Bowden effect
4) I would have expected Bama to be in the top 5

i agree, should have is crazy statement, but the best SEC team didnt play for the NC. Im just glad UGA wasnt the team responsible for breaking the SEC's streak of NC wins.

I was wondering why Florida is ranked so high, but I keep forgetting that they didn't start play football until 1990

That site gives TAMU the same number of "National Title Points" as it gives LSU. I guess all it takes is putting up a plaque.
Texas A&M doesn't have a better football history than Arkansas. Sorry, just....no.

He wants you to acknowledge 1984's vacated title.
Although I think that title ought to be awarded to LSU. LSU tied UF at UF, and went on to represent the SEC in the Sugar for that season.

the bottom of that list is more accurate than most people's gestimation based on current trends. No hate for South Carolina since the OBC has them playing well and there's no reason they can't succeed in the future - but the program was pretty clearly the worst program in the SEC for over a century before he arrived

Apparently it isn't so clear cut: see College Football Data Warehouse, linked in my original post and others in this thread in which LSU ranks no. 2.
I think Tennessee has a strong claim, but it isn't entirely clear cut. The Bama UT rivalry isn't all that counts in SEC history. Actually it's been a very streaky series and overall pretty one-sided in favor of Bama. It is a rivalry of little importance in this century so far, except to Bama and Tennessee fans. Nobody else really cares. Tennessee's lack of any championship in the last 15 seasons doesn't help, and no appearance in a BCS bowl since 2001 doesn't either. Looking at total history, not pre 21st century only, is why LSU has an argument at least.
