My fear going forward.

I have had this fear all season but have not expressed it until now. On paper Alabama has had the best recruiting classes in the nation, but now the core if the team signed with Alabama when they were already on top. No one is left that winning was not expected for. I have seen this seem pattern before in several teams (USC, Miami, etc.) as they start off winning with less talented teams but lose with more "talent" but less heart.

I think he is talking about the 08 and 09 classes being gone now.

Losses are necessary for sustained success of 18-23 year olds. It sucks, but that's the cold hard truth. No need to get embarrassed he way we did tonight though. Losing to equal teams is needed every now and then (08 florida) Shitting the bed is unacceptable.

The last players who signed with Alabama when they had not yet won a championship just played their final game. Those were only fifth year seniors. The players we have on the team going forward have only seen Alabama win it all more often than not. Some of these players, while extremely talented, might not have the competitive edge to win it all.

This. USC didn't win it all in their mini dynasty with the players that came there after the dynasty was already established. I think one of the drawbacks to being the best is you attract some players who are front runners and not true competitors.

And none of those guys playing their last game today played in 08 or 09.
You have to be extremely lucky to win a national championship. Even more so now going forward with the Playoff.

How so? If anything, more slot make a championship more possible. Hell, we'd still be playing for everything if there were a 4 team playoff this year.

I agree completely. It doesnt just "happen", and we have been extremely spoiled as of late. My whole poorly worded point started as an observation on other teams when they began to decline. I just didn't say anything about this in reference to Alabama until now. Is it true? Who knows? It's just my hypothesis at this point. Something to consider.

It's a natural cycle of many programs. A new coach comes in, motivates and develops good players into great players. Additional great players are brought in and they become part of the building process. Everyone is hungry and everyone is on board to build the program. A whole bunch of winning takes place and when those guys who were around for the initial building phase are gone, that entitlement/complacency sets in.
I'm hoping Saban's drive is the X-factor that prevents it from happening to us. Next year is a going to be a huge year for this program...we'll either start our decline or we'll regroup and take another step towards a new run. Got a lot of work though.

I hope so too, remember, it ate Urban Meyer up and chewed him out.

Granted Urban Meyer refused to dance with what brought him there. He was known as a Spread Option coach but completely abandoned his offenses principles because apparently Tim Tebow despite being the size he was couldn't consistently execute his offense.
I mean Urban's passing game was always simple but Urban won two national titles. And if Cam doesn't buy a stolen laptop then likely that dynansty continues or even improves. Especially since Cam has turned out to be a better passer than Tebow. And he executes the zone read better than Tebow. Looking back I can't remember what Tebow actually did at Florida to get his hype/awards. He wasn't actually running much if any option in a so called "spread option" offense. But I have a copy of Urban's utah playbook. Alabama's passing game is super complicated compared to Urban's. His passing game consists of "You run a Post you run a cross".
Urban Meyer may be one of the biggest frauds that lucked into talent to ever coach the game of football.

I get what you're saying. They don't appreciate how much it sucks to lose, until yesterday, or how hard it is to build a winning program. It makes winning multiple years in a row really difficult. Hopefully the sting from the losses this year motivates them next year.

I hate all of this talk about motivation. Why didn't the sting from the AU game motivate the players to perform? Fact is until Saban changes his defensive schemes, we are going to have a lot more of these losses. We need to realize that our complex defense based on checks in and out is not successful against HUNH spread teams. With more teams going this direction, we either have to change our gameplan or get left in the dust.

Michigan State and Stanford were ranked 4th and 5th and actually won their conferences. Stanford had actually been tested and beaten respectable opponents. Michigan State beat an overrated but decent Ohio State. Alabama's signature win is an okay LSU team. Alabama wouldn't have a good argument for the 4th playoff spot. Additionally, Alabama lost their last game and had no way to recover from their loss without other teams losing or politicking. Alabama wouldn't have deserved to be in a playoff this season; they aren't one of the best teams in the country, and that became more apparent last night.

The loss wasn't about complicated schemes. It was about offensive turnovers and bad offensive playcalling. Granted, there was some bad playcalling and execution on the defensive side, but the offensive players and staff deserve most of the blame for last night's loss.
