Interesting stuff. Thanks for compiling it all in one post.

Why? Prior to the mid 80s florida was an extremely average, bland football program. 1990 is when they really blew the lid off and became nationally elite and have remained a top program with the exception a few stretches since then. But prior to the mid 80s Florida was really nothing special.

I hope you realize how much of a joke the old SEC was..
Conference teams meeting up in bowl games to pad each other's stats, multiple split conference champions and teams like LSU who played more SWC teams than their own conference back then.
The SEC was a total Joke.

What kind of surprised me was Vandy and USC not being in any major bowls. Vandy used to be pretty good, and would of figured USC would of had one(maybe ACC championship year.)

This post still doesn't make your bowl record any better.

Why do you count the Cotton Bowl as a major bowl but not the Capital One/Citrus Bowl?

This is why it will be a cold day in hell before Tennessee and Alabama stop playing the Third Saturday in October and why we're so damned stubborn that we'll keep calling it that no matter what day it fall on.

Love history and have always been impressed with Mississippi's performance in bowls.
Funny thing is Minnesota also claims the 1960 title with Ole Miss. Titles were given out before bowls, Minnesota lost their bowl but of course Ole Miss won theirs. The Gophers are 5-9 all time and claim 6 national titles! Mississippi State is 9-6.

The Rose and Orange bowl, with their picks and tie-ins, have made it hard for other teams to get the "Big 4" from the SEC. Alabama and Tennessee got in back in the day. Georgia is the only other SEC team to get into it, despite quite a few SEC teams representing in BCS games. Heck, the only two non-tie in teams to appear in more than 2 games are Alabama (6) and Pittsburgh (4).
From Alabama's last game:
From Alabama's last game:
quote:
Alabama, known as the "wooden horse" led at the half 20-0 and the Trojans had a net loss of 24 yards. USC, which had won eight straight Rose Bowl games since 1923, didn't make a first down until the third quarter when the score was 27-0.
Alabama outgained USC 351 to 41 yards. Quarterback Harry Gilmer threw only 11 times in the game for one touchdown and ran for 116 yards on 16 carries. Hal Self scored twice, on a one-yard run and on a 24-yard Gilmer pass. Gilmer went over from the one, and Lowell Tew hit left guard from the two for points and Norwood Hodges scored up the middle on a one-yard plunge. Hugh Morrow kicked four extra points in the game.[2]
This was the last Rose Bowl game played with "at large" teams from outside the Pac-8/Big 10 conferences. These two elite conferences openly admitted restricting the Rose Bowl, because they were tired of getting beaten by teams playing "hillbilly ball". The same reason they cited for not inviting them pre-1920.

Yeah, it didn't have NEAR the veneration of the Southwest Conference. A buncha Texans on a feral hog hunt. And ethical? No one could hold a candle to the ol' SWC.
